i know you need an LBA48 compatible kernel to put in a har drive over 138gb or so, my question is this: if i hack the kernel on the tivo series 2, after each update the kernel will return back to the previous version right? or will it stay.. alsoif it does go back to previous will the drive get corrupted?

Updates hardly come often enough to worry about. There's one rolling out right now, but it's the first in a year or so, as I understand it. But to be on the safe side, you can disable the loading of new software versions when setting up your hacked system.

Anyway, it will revert to an unhacked kernel, but not the old one -- the new software will come with a new kernel.

True, but I suspect most that use the LBA48 kernel will be posting messages like... "My Tivo doesn't boot anymore... I don't want to lose my recordings... My wife will kill me... Please HELP!!!" if/when another update comes down.

I think exactly the same thing- it just didn't seem worth it to me... I mean unless you really NEED a 400+ hour tivo. :D

120gb drives are super cheap (imho) and 2 of them give you something like 230+ hours, plenty for anyone... I read on another forum about the LBA48 hack, that even after several weeks people were experiencing strange and random problems, like indexing errors, and loss and corruption of data, which is exactly why I decided against the LBA48 hack.

Good luck to the original poster with his endeavor, but my 0.02¢ is to stay away from the LBA48 mod.

Given teh recent great deals on S2 hardware, better to pick up multiple TiVos...

Will the LBA hack allow you to run one big drive as opposed to two small ones? I bet a 300mb drive costs less than two 120s

You'd lose that bet. 120G drives are very frequently available at $60-70 after rebate at the various office supply and electronics retail stores.

I just bought 5 of them (yes five), for $58.00 ea. after rebate. 1 for my main Dtivo, to take it to 242-hours (160[137]+120), 1 for my bedroom Dtivo to take it 146 hours (120+40), 1 for my Xbox (replacing a 30gb), 1 for my youngest son's system (replacing a 30), and one for my wife's personal-machine at her office (replacing a 10gb!)

These were all Western Digital 120gb 8mb buffer in retail boxes from Fry's electronics... Had to be a deal.... :D
