Looks nice. I'm curious what extra functionality this gives you. Is this swappable hard drive used for the tivo OS to run from or is it mearly for an extra linux partition?

Thanks to you both. The mod isn't as clean up close, but the next one will be better...I'm getting more steady with the Dremel. On this one, the drive is slightly tilted, and the finishing around the edges of the TiVo's faceplate isn't as smooth as I'd like.

It's for the TiVo OS. I don't think using it as an extra partition (B drive) would work, since the A drive wouldn't know what streams were available on the B drive.

There are several applications. If I used this unit as a security recorder, I could swap drives weekly and keep a month or so's worth of recordings.

If I did manual recordings, I could swap it back in just before my favorite show came on, and have a single TiVo drive filled with just West Wings, for example.

If I had three or four of these scattered around the house, but a TurboNet in only one of them, I could temporarily swap a drive into that unit in order to download a stream or two.

There may be other reasons for setting three or four TiVos up this way.

If you buy some black 1/4 inch OD or smaller if you can find it, rubber hose you can split it down the middle and use it to finsh your edges...45 degree cut on the corners and it will look almost factory.

Nice job though! I would love to do the same thing except for making it a DVD writer of some kind.

If I installed a Tivo in my car I could take the kid's shows with me!!

I imaging that all I need for an "auto-tivo" would be an inverter, a small LCD and removable drive mounts on my 'real' tivo and the car one.

Even better: Install a wireless card in the car Tivo and copy shows to it directly when it's in the garage. This sounds so cool I think I just have to get the tivo aircard. I have a spare Tivo already for this purpose.

The drive caddies (http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=GN210-BLK) came from Computer Geeks (www.compgeeks.com)...and the same store also offers relatively cheap ($60) 4-inch LCD screen (http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PCM-4). I have a couple of them set up in my living room, one on each TiVo, so that I can see what's currently playing on each TiVo, even if the TV is turned off.

More pics of the mod are available on the TiVo Community Forum, by the way, here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=139882).
