View Full Version : bash on multiple TiVos, one computer?

Thanks to the recent great deals on S2 DTiVos, I now have multiple receivers hooked up.
The computer which is near them has only 1 serial port. Obviously, this could create a hassle trying to do bash-level operations.
has anyone figured out a method to have bash access on multiple TiVos without multiple serial ports on the computer, moving the serial cable, or a switchbox on the serial port?

telnet - networked tivos , I have 4 without using a serial port.

That would be mfs_ftp with static IP in the startup, yes?
Seems the binaries for the S2 version are hard to find. Copelli had them on the update site before the re-design. Good thing I have a backup set.

MFS_FTP isn't the same as telnet. Telnet is terminal connection over IP, instead of serial. On an S1 Tivo it's the tnlited daemon. I don't know anything about the S2's, but I'm pretty sure it's available for them.
You can also just use an A/B serial switch to change from one to the other. :D

tnlited it is, then. Got an S1 and 2 S2s.
Yeah, I'd thought about a switch but it means more cables and you have to go to the actual unit instead of remote access to the computer or FTP in.
Truly, there aren't a lot of scenarios where I think this might be useful. It would certainly let the units run as lean as possible and not have to autoload and set low priorities for stuff that isn't needed all the time. The benefit would be stability.
In my case, there's a lot of business travel. This FTP approach seems good. Log into a PC for passwording then the connection is mirrored to the appropriate TiVo. Suppose I'd like to add a manual scheduled recording and edit the title, this might be the best way to do it remotely.
It could also provide a way for a buddy who lives a few states away and I to schedule recordings on each other's TiVos, probably the only reliable way to avoid rain interference. Well, I guess locating a DTiVo somewhere that doesn't have local channels so the East and West feeds might also work for some stuff, also...
