Does the 3.1U5 initrd check the entire root file system or does it just check /bin and a few other places?
If possible, I would like to make a scaled down file system image for monte.

the initrd checks to see if files have been modified, and deletes them if they don't match the stored signature. nothing happens if there are missing file, except the unit may not boot to the tivo software and function like normal (depending on what files are gone)

OK, I understand that.
So which files are absolutely necessary to create a minimal file system for the U5 kernel's initrd to check and then monte the system. The complete file system is 137M. I just want to trim it down. Maybe this has already been done.

i encourage you to figure this out on your own. basically, you want to be able to boot to bash, thats it...so pretty much anything directly tivo related should be toastable. trial and error, but you should be able to get it

Honestly Sleeper,
At 150MB and under, I think that for most that's acceptable for downloading. I think due to everyones different setup, you should create the most stable image and not worry too much about size.
Once everyone has a 3b hdd with bash, the rest should take no more than 30 minutes for everyone to get their stuff back up and running and another 20 minutes to back up their own image.
At that point it might be a great idea for people to share their custom MFS images.
However I could be way off but don't make it harder on yourself :) ! All of us thank you already for your time and hard work.

Mr Black,
Thanks for your advice. I am hard at work on a Tivo project that I will soon publicly release. I have the necessary skill set to figure it out on my own but I just wanted to see if it had already been done before diverting my time. Apparently it had been done by alldeadhomiez and you had the exact idea as you posted in this thread:

Maybe you had forgotten about it

alldeadhomiez and i were discussing the issue before he posted that info. my assumption is that you had found that info by searching, and wanted more info. evidently, that wasn't the case. a lesson for the future for you...possibly?
