Different TiVos, Different Images

Is the TiVo software unique to each individual model? For example, if I had a Series 2 40 hour unit and Series 2 80 hour unit, would I be able to restore a 40 hour backup to new hard drive and install it into the 80 hour TiVo? Thanks.

I think you can do this within certain boundaries. The boundaries are that the manufacturer (and maybe series) be the same. I say this partially because I just got a remanufactured TiVo from TiVo and it came with (no, this is not a typo) 2.03. It's a 60 hour Series II. AFAIK, the earliest software that these units ever shipped with new was 3.0. So, it seems likely to me that TiVo remanufacturing is just putting the same version on all their drives (set for the appropriate size) and dropping them in.

The other caveat that I've seen on this forum is that you will want to (need to) do a Clear and Delete Everything as soon as possible.

The answer (as adnyla stated) is that yes you can put images from different TiVo's onto other ones... but the parameters are that you have stay with the same manufacturer (i.e. can't put an HDVR2 image onto a DSR7000, or Phillips onto Sony or Hughes, etc.) and it must be the same series. So basically what this leaves you with are the Series2 SA units are all interchangeable, although I believe if you put an image from a smaller unit onto a bigger drive, you have to do mfsadd to recognize the space.

Thanks, I was attempting to execute the 2 Kernel Monte and was having some problems and wanted to eliminate the possibility that the 3.0 image I was using was not compatible. The monte is now working perfectly. Turns out I consistently missed a step.

This has proven to be no longer current info as SA S2 images are being put onto HDVR2's with success.
