I read someplace that it's possible to enable version upgrades while using the monte hack. But endless searching has turned up nothing. Does anyone know if and how it can be done?

This is the original monte thread. The later messages talk about allowing upgrades while preserving monte. But I haven't tried it.

Yeah, that's exactly it. Thanks! I glanced at that thread, but I missed it completely.

I was researching this recently as well.

It looks like the u5 root goes on partiton 5 and boot (u5 kernel)goes on partition 2.

Then there is a a new bootpage necessary to fake the unit out when bootpage -f is called after an upgrade.

Some say that the HDVR2 can only use 3,4 and 6,7 partitions.

Here's my theory:

The partittion that has its bootable flag set is the partition whose kernel gets booted. It uses the file system stored in the bootpage "root=" parameter.

So it might be possible to set the bootable flag on partition 2 and set root=/dev/hda5 inthe bootpage.

Embeem and hamsterman are the only ones that I have read that were pursuing it. Maybe they will explain it.
