I have a 120 gig WD that was set up by another member here. I came home one day to find that the tivo was stuck on the power up almost there screen. i unplugged it over night and tried the following day. still gets stuck at the same screen. so i bought a serial cable from 9th tee. i tried to connect and i can't get bash. i am using the hyper terminal built into XP.

anyone have any idea what is wrong here? have any of the other members ran into this? i seartched and didn't find one post with the same problem or i didn't search the right keywords.

well, thats the perfect example of why you shouldn't pay people to hack your unit...you will have no idea whats going on when things go wrong.

as for your question, if it gets to the 'almost there' screen, it means that its partway through the rc.sysinit and failing. reasons why this can occur vary. illegal dtv hacks applied to the unit improperly can cause it, as can file corruption. no matter what, you are going to need to pull the drive to figure out whats going on

I agree, I should have done it myself. But at the time i was really busy and wasn't able to jump into a new hobby. I am ready to get at it now. What do you recommend as my first point of attack? I've been reading a bit on here and i see alot of bash commands, not sure if thats what they are called, and I am not sure of what they do. Is there a list of commands that tell you what they do. I've seen alot /xxxx and I'm not sure what all that means. Yes i realize I'm a newbie and need to read alot more.

What do you recommend i do first to try and get this going again?
As soon as i fix this other HP WIN98 pc i will be able to tinker a bit more and maybe even start from scratch.

Thanks for helping a guy with limited knowledge.

I'm going to start from scratch on the HDD thats in my tivo. Should i put the HDD in my pc and format it clean and go from there? Or can i just start the process following cobelli's guide?
