OK, before I start, I'll mention that I have searched and read the forums and have seen lots of info on this topic.

I've got a DTivo with 25xtreme loaded on it. I have a turbonet on the way. I have the entire broadcast season of Firefly which I'd love to be able to eventually get onto the PC or recording onto DVD.

Question 1: Is there any chance that the noscramble hack was installed by default when I installed my 2nd drive and 25xterme?

Question 2: How does one determine if a stream is scrambled or not (prior to attempting an extraction)?

Question 3: If the recordings are scrambled, what's the best way to archive them on the PC in the hopes that a stream descrambling tool is ever developed/released? Or is this such a remote possibility that it's not even worth the effort?

Kind regads,

SparQy.

1) no

2) you can install the noscramble kernel module. scrambled shows won't play with it installed

3) not really worth the effort. most stuff can be recorded some other time. what little can't be done, can be recorded via a video capture card.

1) maybe, depends on how you installed extreme. from bash, type "cat /proc/modules" & look for something like 'noscramble 1136 0"

2) as mrblack said, try playing it with noscramble definatly installed. you could also try extracting it as ty. scrambles can't be extracted as ty & you'll get a 0 byte file

3a) scrambles can be archived & restored in tmf format using mfs_ftp. restored scrambles are only playable on the tivo they were extracted from & you must be sure the disk configuration keys match (see the sticky mfs_ftp thread for details)

3b) a descrambler isn't all that remote, keep your fingers crossed ;)
