View Full Version : DTivo Video Extraction

Hi. I'm very much a beginner in the world of TiVo hacking but I've managed to upgrade the storage capacity, get TurboNet working, install Telnet, FTP, TivoWeb, and a few other goodies.
The question I have is regarding video extraction:
I'm having trouble finding really current information about extracting video from the DTivo DSR6000. My box was recently upgraded to v3.1.0b-02-1-001. I re-enabled TurboNet and the various programs without any problems. I've been attempting to use TyStudio and TyTools to extract video so that I can watch them on my PC or burn them to DVD (just getting them on to the PC in a watchable format would be great, at this point). I can download the TY files without any problems using TyTools v8r3. But then I get nowhere with the files. Using VSplit mode creates 2 files (*.m2v and *.m2a) but the file sizes are 0. Using TyStream mode retrieves the files successfully but I am not able to do anything further with them. The files seems to be around 1GB per hour.
Does this have something to do with scrambling? I've seen many references to extracting video from DTivo with no mention of scrambling while others mention it. So I'm confused as to whether or not "descrambling" is necessary. If it is, what is the best method to go about doing it? Also, will doing that render current recordings unwatchable? Is the descrambling method current and safe for the latest DTivo firmware upgrade? It seems that many sites and postings seem to refer to older version of programs so I'm wary about downloading and installing any of them.
Any help and guidance that's specific to the Philips DSR6000 with v3.1.0b would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
D. Piddy

Hey dpiddy,
Did you ever figure your problem out? I'm looking to do something similar.
A friend gave me his DirecTiVo hard drive and wants the shows extracted to DVD.
I'm very new, and haven't done anything except expand my capacity and enable a few codes.
Please let me know!
:)

I would imagine the reason no one has answered you is because this information is already covered so well and easily found here on the forum. If you had read even a little bit, you would already know the answers to your questions without having to even ask. Basically, if you don't record them unscrambled to begin with, then forget about getting something you can use on the PC or a DVD. Turn noscramble on ASAP and then read a bit about extraction.

You will need to disable scrabling on you DirecTivo there are two ways to do it with v3.1.0b-02-1-001.
I recommend using Autoscramble so that you can still watch the shows you recorded before you turned off scrambling:
Get Autoscramble.zip from the following thread (I think it's on page 2): http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/s...ight=noscramble
Autoscramble commands: to be added to rc.sysinit which is in /etc/rc.d
insmod /lib/modules/noscramble_mbm.o
tivosh /var/hack/autoscramble.tcl &
The other way is with a registry hack which was for V3.01 but still works at 3.01b:
dd if=/dev/hda`bootpage -b /dev/hda` of=/dev/hda`bootpage -b /dev/hda` bs=1 skip=468 seek=550524 count=2

there is no such thing as a registry hack on the tivo, since there is no registry. this is a kernel patch

oviTyonS,
Thanks for your response. That's the answer I needed. I'll try it out tonight.
Also, thanks for not assuming that I'm some ***** that doesn't know how to read or search. All I needed was a quick answer that's specific to my equipment/situation and that's what you provided so I really appreciate it.

oviTyonS,
Actually... the URL you provided does not seem to work. Can you trying responding again or PMing me?
By the way, with "autoscramble" are there other programs that need to be installed along with it, like Tivolater, or anything else? I'm trying to go the minimalist route so if I don't need to install 25Xtreme, Tivolater, or other files... all the better. If I do, any guidance is much appreciated (again, I'm using a DSR6000 with v3.1.0b).
Again, any info you can provide this newbie is much appreciated.

P.S. I apologize for asking for information that some think is easily and widely available. I have indeed come across a huge amount of information for hacking, extracting, etc. But the sheer volume of info, the conflicting messages, the oddities of the DTivos, and the varying versions of Tivo software and hacking software make this quite an endeavor for inexperienced Tivo-hackers and/or Linux users such as myself. Therefore, I appreciate any and all helpful responses.

dpiddy,
Yo bro, before you get going in the wrong direction, there is much to learn before jumping in with both feet here.
You must install all the appropriate hacks on your dtivo before you will have success. You may as well install them all, doesn't take that long. There are several tutorials, one of my favorites is Wankers at http://www.angelfire.com/darkside/wanker/ step by step, leads you by the hand. Once you have all the hacks installed, then it is time to go to TRILIGHT's site, HTTP://DVDGUIDES.TRILIGHT.NET, and do some more reading.
Learning to extract ty files and burn to dvd is not too hard once you get the right sw and have it all configured. After reading TRILIGHT's page go to the "Official TyStudio" thread on this forum...the answers are all in the places I just recommended...now go have some fun!! I knew "diddly" about a month or two ago, now burning dvd's and having success!! Tou will too!;)

Sorry,
dd if=/dev/hda`bootpage -b /dev/hda` of=/dev/hda`bootpage -b /dev/hda` bs=1 skip=468 seek=550524 count=2
is a Kernel hack not a registry hack.
Try this link: http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19918&highlight=noscramble
or just do a search on autoscramble.
To use Autoscarmble, I think you just need the noscramble_mbm.o module installed in /lib/modules/
and autoscramble.tcl in /var/hack/
and to edit you rc.sysinit to include the two lines mentioned.
