Is there a way to 'lock' a thread, so no one can add to it? Other then moderators?

If so, maybe we should start a few of them for the guides. They usually start off fine, then get drasticly side tracked.

I figure a mod can move a post to a locked guide when it has relevant info.

Am I off base on this?

yes, mods can lock, unlock, delete, and move threads, as well as editing, deleting, and moving individual posts. in fact, i usually spend 20-30 minutes each morning going through each new thread and seeing if its in the right place, then moving it if its not.

realise that moving posts in the way you suggest takes time. also, there are hundreds of guides floating around. as a mod, i have to decide which guides to sticky and which to not sticky. there are a variety of reasons, such as quality issues, inaccuracies, etc. also, there are many people who seem to think that they have 'made it' by getting a post of theirs stickied. we dont need that sort of person making a guide for that purpose.

in short, guide threads generally have their first post reflect the most accurate info, with discussion stuff to follow. are there better ways? maybe, but this way seems to work. moving threads here, there, and everywhere is a timeconsuming endeavor.

I certainly wouldn't want to create a bunch more work for any mod. A little maybe.

I'm looking at it from a newbie point of view. The stickys up top are *wonderful* and chuck full of useful info. But also full of a bunch of fluff. Kinda makes it tough to filter out, or even worse, when doing a search for a topic.

An idea? Kinda like the alt.binaries newsgroups, where they have the one 'forum' (thread here) for the binaries and another for discusion. .....So on that note, sticky the guide, and sticky yhre discusion, but lock the guide.

I'd be willing to help out on it. Though I'd only take on ones I know about. (prom hack setups)

I do plan on writing a guide. Have started it. Its all what worked for me with the help of a LOT of people's info, yourself included.

if too much stuff gets stickied, then no one will read any of it
