Okay, I've worked with S1 dtivos using xtreme before, but I've just come across my first S2. I have read several different guides, etc., but haven't got an understanding yet.

Is there a basic, step by step, *****s guide to the various fixes somewhere?

Or can someone answer basic questions for me, such as:

What is 'monte'?

What is the bare minimum I'd need to do to be able to add/change files on the tivo drive?

What is the bare minimum to prevent HDVR2 from needing to phone tivo?

I want this to be a set it and forget it kind of thing, just want to be able to usedtivo w/o any landline or internet connection available.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

There's sticky thread on the monte hack in the series 2 forum. I'd recommend you read through the entire thread before attempting the monte hack. Right now there are three different methods for performing the monte hack. You'll find the first method listed in the aforementioned thread posted by d7o. There's a 2nd method using the montestuff.zip files available from the twinbrothers ftp site. There's a thread with a guide for using it in the series 2 section written by yours truly. The 3rd method is Sleeper's tivoscript ISO CD that basically automates the entire process and makes it ridiculously easy to perform the hack. Just look for Sleeper's thread about series 2 scripts. I would recommend that you try one of the other two methods first to get a better handle on what's going on in the event that you ever have to troubleshoot any problems down the road.

If you've really read 'several different guides' as you say... then you should be able to answer your own basic questions.

If you're not willing to put in even a little time learning you've got a lot of trouble ahead when problems, programs you like, or tivo software updates show up.

Yes, have read several of the thread guides. But they seem to have the same problems as the replies I've received here. While they allude to different modifications, and how to do the changes, I have yet to figure out what a 'monte hack' is!

Again, perhaps I haven't found the right thread yet to read, I'll go check the one in s2 forums now that was pointed out. If anyone can suggest other threads that would explain things from a more basic level than how to, something more of a what is, that would be appreciated.
