16x9 on Hughes S1 DTiVo?

In the setup options of my Hughes S1 DTiVo there's an option to change between 16x9 and 4x3 aspect ratio. I have the TiVo connected to my Sony HS10 projector through my Denon 2802 Stereo Receiver. What my question/problem is is that I can't get the TiVo to output the video in 16x9. If I leave the projector to display in 4x3 and have the TiVo in 4x3, the image is fine, if I change the TiVo to 16x9, the image doesn't change, now if I change the projector to 16x9 and leave the TiVo at 16x9, the image is stretched horizontally (no black bars on the side) and if I change the TiVo back to 4x3 it is displayed the same as 16x9. So, it appears that the TiVo doesn't display in 16x9 or does the channel have to be displayed in 16x9 for there to not be any stretching; what I would've expexted to happen is if the channel was being broadcasted in 4x3, the TiVo would put black bars on the side to prevent the horizontal stretching.
