OK,

I've been doing some searching for free paint apps which are powerful enough yet not too overwhelming for general use to make menus for tytool.

Here's the 2 I like the best:

http://www.gimp.org
http://www.squirreldome.com

Unfortunately, the Windoze version of gimp is a little dated.

Any suggestions for other free apps? They should be of this calibre, not teh super simple stuff.

I know its not free, but I played around with DVD Menu (http://www.mediachance.com/dvdmenu/) once. It seemed to be an easy to use tool for making amazing menus.

Yes, I've look at that also and sent the link to Josh at one point. It's a real challenge to find freeware DVD menu editing aps, no question.

Here's a couple more:

Pixia http://www.ab.wakwak.com/~knight/
Oriens Enhancer Gold http://www.oriens-solution.com/

This one looks real interesting, it does text layout for bitmapped fonts. Might be real helpful:
