View Full Version : Why no rsh or rcp for TiVo?

Two apps which I would find very useful on the TiVo are the *nix rsh and rcp commands. Why has no one compiled the rshd, or rexecd or whatever is required for the TiVo to accept rsh and rcp commands from an external computer?
Think of the benefits - you could remotely start vserver to stream video with a command from your PC such as:
"rsh tivo /var/hack/vserver &".
That's much easier to automate than telnet scripting.
You could also remotely start mfs_ftp and tserver.
Is there some inherent reason why this wouldn't work?

You could do that with ssh, and I know at least two different implementations have been compiled for series 2 Tivo: lsh and OpenSSH.

Well my knowledge of programming is rather limited and my knowledge of Linux is even more limited.
There have been others who have compiled TiVo versions of many Linux utilities, such as: grep, cron, samba (with limited success) and nfs.
Is there something unique about rsh (or is it rexecd) that would be difficult on the TiVo.

couple of possibilites:
nobody that wants it knows how
nobody that knows how wants it
the one guy that wanted it & knew how didn't feel like supporting it (so it never got posted)
it was posted & nobody noticed

I also thought this would be useful. ssh is just too slow, and probably unnecessary on a home LAN (you wouldn't open your TiVo up to the internet, would you?).
Since I couldn't find another port (but did find your old post :) ), I made my own, based on GNU InetUtils. I don't know whether you are still interested and have a S1 TiVo. If so, you can download from here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/maxwells.daemon/tivo/software.html).

Maxwells - I say your post about your tcp utilities a few days ago and I have been meaning to have a look at this. If I remember correcty the reason that I wanted this relates to a couple of issues:
1) Loading guide data - I am in Canada and I can't subscribe to TiVo so I have to "roll my own" data. This requires transferring files and starting processes on the TiVo so rsh should be ideal for this.
2) Automating extractions from the TiVo to my PC. There may be better ways to do this now, but I'll have to think about it.
Thanks for writing this - I often got those errors and wondered why! When I have some time (which won't be for a few weeks) I will try this out and get back to you.
