View Full Version : Dummies Guide to increasing bitrate?

I'm not interested in most of the hacks that you guys are working diligently to perofrm, but since I've gotten a big screen TV my SA Series 2 has been driving me insane with its terrible grainy picture. Is there a simple guide that is pretty ***** proof I can follow to increase the bitrates on the tivo, especially for LIVE and BEST quality settings? I've got 160GB of storage, so I'm not concerned about losing a little bit of recording time.

I'm hoping someone chimes in here too. I think there's a module/resource for tivoweb that's supposed to do it but I really haven't searched for it.

Although, I'm hesitant to post this info for you I'm doing it to illustrate a point.
Taking the time to learn how to search actually saves time.
You waited patiently for ANY info for 14 days then posted another 'help me' post.
I agreed with you that this topic interested me and got your *bump* post only because I'd subscribed to this thread offhand in case you got an answer. I was busy with other tivo hacks and searching for this one wasn't high on my list at the time.
A second or two after I posted my response above I decided that I might want to know now what the deal was now, so I searched.
1. Click Search button.
2. Type the search topics: I used bitrate and resolution. Notice the AND.
3. Click the 'Show as POSTS' button.
4. Receive 104 matches
5. I decided that this (http://themurrays.homeip.net/downloads/tivo/tivo.html) link posted by Imurray was insteresting.
The Old link applies to changing the bitrate for SA tivos, but I think it's only good for S1 tivos since I don't have any bitrate selection in my 'Resource' tab in TivoWeb.
Also, laserfan in this (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=92467&highlight=bitrate+and+resolution#post92467) thread pointed to this (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12736&highlight=544x480) thread, which I believe contains most of the known info that should help me.
No, I don't have any of my bitrate/resolution settings changed yet but I know much more about the issue and I didn't wait 14 days to find out more about it.
As a matter of fact it took much longer to type this than the search did.
One more tip, when opening new pages or following links from the search page DON'T left click them to go there... RIGHT click and select 'Open page in new window-with IE, or <CTRL>-N in Netscape I think'
I apologize if you already knew this but maybe someone will benefit.

Actually, No.. those posts result in how to do it on an already hacked tivo. I'm looking for a simple guide to accomplish the task on a S2 SA Tivo. I have yet to find any helpful guide on how to get these tools onto a S2 Tivo.

Are you aware that you can't put ANY tool on a SA S2 running 3.2 or above WITHOUT hacking the box - monte, telnet, ftp and all the rest?
Your post makes no sense. You want a 'capability', ie to change the recording bitrate, that tivo doesn't provide. You'll have to 'provide' that capability yourself.
Even if there were a "simple guide" as you put it, it would begin AFTER you already had your tivo in a state where you could put "these tools onto a S2 SA tivo" since even if you got them onto a non-hacked tivo by pulling the drive and mounting it w/linux... When you boot up the tivo OS will check the hash/sigs and rewrite over anything you did.
Is any of this making sense to you? I'd like to help but you've got to roll up you sleeves and start hacking.

PS. I should have caught this in your first post and responded.

Actually, to accomplish what you want you ARE or SHOULD be interested in most of the hacks we've done. Monte, bash, telnet, ftp and tivoweb are a must. Good luck!

In the more accepted side of Tivo hacking there are really nice step-by-step guides for every type of mod/hack. Is there anything like that on this side? I don't mind rolling up my sleeves, but I'm not going to experiment just to figure it out. Proven methods are much safer and easier to follow along. I have spent countless hours searching and browsing here but haven't found any kind of step by step guides that walk one through getting a S2 tivo into that state.
Perhaps they don't exist because what I want to do is impossible. I want to make these changes without losing *any* functionality, including keeping the latest version of the tivo software (4x) on the unit.

I'm not sure what this means. The only thing you can do with a Series 2 on TCF is put larger drives in so none of the guides beyond Hinsdale apply to you.

I'm trying not to be offensive here but that's the most senseless statement I've heard lately.
I used needo's guide which was a copy of d70's with minor changes and a couple of images and errors provided. I corrected the errors and gave a little more info in my post on Page 6 of the Standalone Series 2 People Out of Luck (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=118185#post118185) thread. This is a fine way of getting there and you'll learn a lot.
OTOH, Sleeper has a no brainer iso that you could use with no guide required. You won't know much at the end but your tivo will probably work fine.

There are TOO MANY guides. No there aren't any as pretty and detailed as Hinsdale's guide, but the one's here are more current and allow much more capablilty for you.
In my sig I've listed all the functionality I have with 4.01 version tivo software. They don't like it, although they should, and you'll probably never find the images you need since the tivo image crackdown.

Prepare your self for the wrath off David B. He just can't stand someone not reinventing the wheel for invention's sake. :)
Asking if a binary exists and a small guide on installing it, just irritates him to no end.
So, overall THANKS !!!!
