Newbie Question on a purchase

First off, I am canadian, i have dtv, and i want a tivo. The only place around here only can get the philips 312-04. Is this a series 1 or 2. What will I be able to do right out of the box with it and my DTV. Can i record, record ppv, or do i need a subscription to work with DTV. Also can this model be upgraded to later transfer to my computer.
