I broke down and purchased a Samsung SIR-S4120 (100 hour Tivo) because I can't get the 3.1 upgrade to work on my DSR6000 for my missing locals. The specs on the unit look good, but I hate the color (silver) and want to spray paint it black to match the tens of thousands of dollars of other equipment that I have already
Has anyone ever spray painted a silver Tivo black before? I hate to do it, but the last silver component I had only lasted 5 minutes before I returned it.
Thanks!
ps: Why are they making things silver now? Would it kill them to give us a choice of black or silver?????

i hear ya spta. i have some dsr6ks and some hdvr2s, and i wish the hdvr2s were black. i think it's just because silver is "the thing" now. offering two colors would drive up the cost for a box that's already selling on razor thin margins. :(

T60s are silver, also. Silver has a longer shelf life because scratches don't show as easily. You can always put it behind smoked glass doors or get an IR repeater and hid the base unit.

Ive actually painted and put plexi windows and neons for people in the past. If you use good quality stuff it looks pro. To be honest, I have only had it done by a good friend that owns an autobody shop and sprayed them with basic black pretty quick. The only tough part is the front panel. I always took the time to take the pcb out an remove the buttons too. I'm sure a good quality spray paint and some careful taping would do the trick. Also note that a dsr panel will fit on a newer tivo if you cut the end of the card off a little, have done that as well, and the cover is the same......

Well since it is too cold for painting now I'll have to wait until spring time but I think I'll give it a try. The problem with the silver is it sticks out like a sore thumb even from across the room. Even a black paint job that is less than perfect would be better for me. As mentioned, it's the buttons that are gonna be the b!tch. Although I could probably live with silver buttons as long as the unit was black.
I've sprayed things before by scuffing with 220 grit sand paper and doing a coat of primer and several light coats of spraying so I think I can do it. Once spring time comes around be on the the look out for my "befores and afters" :D
