MS has realeased a new version of Windows services for Unix and it is now free. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/default.asp
Could this be an alternative to using cygwin for some of the TiVo related programs that are being developed here i.e. TiVo-Mplayer, etc. Would this get around some of the problems with Cygwin - such as filesize limitations?

I think you would have similar file size limitations as those are in the base OS and no tool sitting on top of that would easily get around the limitations.

Then why does cygwin have an issue with large file sizes (I believe > 4Gig) when XP/win2k do not as long as your drives are NTFS?

Hmmm, I think maybe its an API issue since tytools has the same problem with big files. Might be that the file address variable in the object they are using doesn't have enough bits.
If thats the case SFU might be the ticket, you should try it and see what you come up with.

Actually I just noticed that this does NOT work with XP Home which is probably the bulk of us so we are SOL and stuck with Cygwin.

AFAIK it includes NFS, which is very useful (well, not as useful as it used to be, but still good.)
