Welp, the ol' Maxtor finally gave out last night and I've got to rebuild my DSR6000. Can someone kindly point me to a 3.1.0c2 or 3.1.0d image?

TIA :)

No offers yet. I can hook anyone up with a 4.0.1b image in exchange for 3.1.0c2 or 3.1.0d.

I have a Tivo image and I have yet to get a good build. The image extracts fine but my build won't boot. I would like it if someone who knows what they are doing could use this image and let me know if it works for them. I am at the end of my rope attempting to do this.

PM me and I will give you the URL. Don't ask if you don't know what you're doing and just need an image.

This is the image name: 4.0.1b_unhacked_standalone.mfs 63,267 KB

I got the same image (assumedly from the same guy) and it works fine. The IMAGE is just part of the problem. If memory serves, you run a DirecTivo RID unit (dvr40 or dvr80).

this image from "THIS" guy works fine. tried it on a 40gb, 80gb, 160gb, 200gb...no problems....

ScottB

It seemed that the image extracted fine and I was thinking that the image isn't the problem but something I am doing or not doing. I get to the Powering Up, Please Wait and no further. I have been through the steps about 8 times now and I believe that I am getting the expected results from each command. I'm not giving up though. I WILL GET IT TO WORK! I have the Hughes SD-DVR40.

Compwiz... is that image from a 40 gig drive? Scott, if you're trying to restore to a 40 gig drive, that might be the issue, but you should get an error if the drive isn't big enough (from mfsrestore).

ScottB

I know that I have tried to restore an other image that was for a bigger drive and it produced an error message. That image produces no error.

I'm having a hard time finding a 40 gig image that will fit on the stock maxtor drives found in the RCA DVR39 units.

I have 2 images:
40g-s2-4.0.1b.mfs -> 395,380 KB
Tivo-S2-4.0.1b-02-2-xxx.mfs -> 166,554 KB

Neither seem to work with the:

mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /cdrive/<image> /dev/hdc
or
mfsrestore -zpi /cdrive/<image> /dev/hdc

Keep getting message that the destination drive is not big enough. Anyone get around this?

PB - You've been super helpful to many people on this board at finding images. Since eMule is starting to be the preferred method of getting images, why not just create one message with all the ed2:// links. I've read like 20 times over the past few days "where can I get a v4.0 image, where can I find a xxxx, etc..."

All the people requesting special email requests and links to ftp sites should be responsible for some work ;) make them figure out eMule..

I understand this is the "image begging thread" - but jeeze, it's been posted time and time again...

I do understand your point. My point is that while "If they aren't bright enough to at least skim the thread and find the information they need, how are they going to use it?" applies, it IS the Christmas Season. And I should be nice to those with a lack of initiative. (Of course after the Twelfth Day of Christmas, all rules are off).

i see. Well, in either way my offer still remains. If need be ill rephrase what i said, and say non-hacked tivo images. And if i set it up and tivo gets angry... its not like i will rebel and keep the tracker going, i will remove it instantly and apologize to tivo.

But, this is all just a thought ive had and could be better than scouring eDonkey and not finding a image, or a broken image. If noone seems at all interested and likes eDonkey, then it wont happen.

Well the whole thing is at one time tivo turned a blind eye to image sharing... now they stricktly forbid it.

So thats kinda the situation people are stuck in... however if you need an image under the table there are lots of files on eMule and people over at tivocommunity occationaly bend the rules.

However I do think it would be nice to see a prehacked image for the various platforms and OS' that was made according to the guides just be available on eMule.

I still do not see how these DVR upgrade sites can get away with selling the image and yet the hacker community gets their hand slapped.

Many of the critical hacks are copyrighted. If people start distributing them with images against the developers' wishes, the well will go dry. As new hardware/software revisons are released, there will be fewer developers willing to release their work. Then you will be stuck with the features that come "out of the box."

Also, see the "prehacked tivo" sticky in the newbie forum. There will be an influx of people that have no idea how their Tivo works, asking for help on fixing problems they have no idea how they caused.

Bottom line, a Tivo has enough features to justify using it as advertized. If you want more features, learn how they work and do it yourself.

Despite all that, the killhdinitrd software, and kernels modified by that program are illegal to distribute.

I understand that you wish it were different, but it isn't.

Even if you found one that was illegally distributed, it would not be supported by DDB.

In fact, any DDB member who claims to have a killhdinitrd'ed image for distribution may have his information turned over to PTVUpgrade for prosecution as well as being permanently banned from DDB for violating the licensing of killhdinitrd.

So, in short, don't do it. And, if it hasn't sunk in yet, stop asking for it.

PTV upgrade (http://partners.ptvupgrade.com/z/40/CD20/) has legal arrangments with tivo - they're a legit source for UNHACKED images, even so, tivo legal will NOT allow them to sell pre-hacked images

others mostly sell via ebay - they get their auctions / accounts cancelled for repeat violations and/or access/hosting terminated with takedown notices - then paypal freezes their assets until the lawsuit's settled - since paypal requires bank info, it's a lot harder for them to dissapear than they thought

i never had intentions of distrobuting a hacked tivo image. just clean images. I think its something that could be done, and as long as the images arent hacked, i dont see why tivo would be upset. Its not like i can really make a knockoff tivo with the images or something. But it could be a temporary solution, and even maybe i could contact TiVo and get their permission to host legit clean images of TiVo's.

And yet it can't... still...

There are a small number of authorized sites. If you are not one of them, you are not allowed to host or distribute images without express permission from Tivo Inc.... peroid.

Do you think you are the first to think of this? Surprise... you aren't!

This thread isn't for theorizing or pontificating, it's for image begging, so you have a few choices.
1 - Beg for an image
2 - Buy an image from an authorized site

Notice there is no choice for arguing the reasoning behind image hosting legality.

fwiw, some utils have allready begun targeting illicit images - that permenant gsod 3 weeks after install may not be accidental...

Could you be more specific. Many people have acquired unhacked 4.01
images from p2p. Several members have reported success with an image Tivo-S2-4.01b02-02-xxx.mfs which was seeded by someone from this board.

Is the attempt to target images that included hacks like killhdintird which aren't supposed to be distributed or are you trying to target anyone who didn't buy an image from pt vupragde? Several of us contributed to your bounties and I'd hate to think we'll be getting a GSOD just because we chose not to buy an image from pt vupgrade.

You're trying to steer business to pt vupgrade. They really should do a better job. Having people restore a 4.0 image without using a lba48 kernel isn't very customer friendly. Finessing jdnier's licensing agreement so they can, possibly legally, distribute his software without his permission isn't very nice.

I've seen statements like this several times, and they never cease to amaze me. PTVupgrade is distributing original TiVo software, WITH TiVo's permission. They include an installer so people can load a drive without using MFS restore. Has anyone claimed that loader violates any agreement?

The LBA-48 issue is even funnier. 4.x software is not LBA-48 aware, sending it out with an LBA-48 aware boot CD would cause problems for anyone with a > 137 Gig hard drive UNLESS a LBA-48 TiVo kernel was included. And including an LBA-48 TiVo kernel would cause another round of problems. Let's face it, some of the people buying these images would have problems installing a killhdinitrd kernel, let alone monte-ing into the LBA-48 kernel.

Let's face it, some of the people buying these images would have problems installing a killhdinitrd kernel, let alone monte-ing into the LBA-48 kernel.

PlainBill

Bill--go back to the RID files section. It was suggested that people buy instant cake for the 4.0 image and to buy the LBA48 framework disk. MY POST WAS IN THAT CONTEXT. The RID hack includes a monte to a LBA48 kernel. There were posts that suggested you re-expand with the LBA48 disk. ADH and others said that leads to corruption and is a poor way to do it.

Lou from ptv upgrade finally admitted the problem and is/was working on some type of solution.

People who chose to pay for an image file and the upgrade CD might like the image included on the LBA framework disk. More reliable and less CD swapping.

A helpful poster steered me to winiso, I created a linux boot CD that had everything I needed in one place BUT the initial posts and CD images lead some users into using instant cake and being left with a corrupt partition or a drive not being fully used.

I recommended PTVupgrade because they're one of the VERY FEW authorized sources for clean images, they sponsor the forum, and I really don't fancy trying to troubleshoot all sorts of wacky problems caused by hero-wannabe's hosting broken images

4.x does NOT include lba48 support natively, the glitch is a shortcoming of mfstools under lba24 and really shouldn't be blamed on PTVupgrade - my bad perhaps for not catching it, but I've never needed the "***** proof" installer so it slipped in under the radar

Yes, it would work. I would suggest making an immediate backup using MFS Tools (mfsbackup), then letting the system call in to update to the latest version (4.0.1b-02-1-xxx if I recall correctly).

Once you are at 4.0.1b-02-whatever, you can copy the S2SA drive over to the new drive for the HDVR2 (do NOT reuse your original HDVR2 drive, keep that safe for emergencies). Then put the new HDVR2 drive in the HDVR2, when it boots run Clear and Delete Everything*. After it restarts, run guided setup, and you're running the latest version of 4.x on your HDVR2. (*Alternatively, hack the drive with killhdinitrd, AlphaWolf's Series 2 utilities, etc, then run 51killer).

Why can't you have internet access that doesn't block things? If you can afford a tivo you should be able to get decent net access. I'm confused.

First time posting here. New to hacking Tivo, but know my way around linux. A friend messed up his tivo DSR704 trying to hack it with sleeper. Ended up with nothing on his original drive. He has asked me to look at it, and directed me here for some advise. I think that if I can get a hold of a backup that I can make this unit functional again (can it be that easy)... I have a SIR S4040R. Can I back up this and utilize it on his drive? if not can someone supply me with an image, backup? I really do not know what software version it had. any help or a point in the right direction would be appreciated...

Hello all,

I'm in desperate need of virgin ISO for RCA DVR80 (DirecTivo). I was able to muck things up a bit and need a clean backup. I've tried aMule with mixed results. Not sure which file(s) are the correct ones to use, considering the different series and software versions. Good afternoon, gents (and ladies if there are any). To make a long story short, about a year ago the hard drive in my DSR6000 died. Rather than continueing to screw with it I got cable and one of their DVR's. Well I am back with the tivo again except I come back and find that Tivo has thrown a hissy over the image distribution. I would like to get a hold of an Xtreme 2.5 disk or maybe a tivolater build cd. I have searched the forums as well as usenet and most of the p2p sites. Now that suprnova is down I can't find any torrent links. for the disks anywhere.
Can someone either send me a link, post it on a p2p network somewhere or put it out on usenet? I can also provide an FTP destination if someone would prefer to upload it to me.

Exact size is irrelevant, as it will differ from system to system. In any case, it is:

More importantly, the md5sum is:

I got it from the torrent link (http://www.b00tix.com/tivo-40g-s2-4.0.1b.mfs.torrent) It downloaded putty fast. From two IP address' they started with the same IP number. I guess it came from the same place. After it downloaded my Azureus program did not help share the upload any.

I have a 120 gig hard drive in my PC and that's the only drive I have that can easy use over 40 gigs. I used True Image Backup to back up Windows XP hard drive to a Linux server I have. This server all so runs the TiVo music and photos. It's a Fedora core 3 server.

I had a 10 gig hard drive that I put the tivo-40g-s2-4.0.1b.mfs file on. I set it up like this:

hda 10 gig fat 32 hard drive
hdc My windows 120 gig hard drive
hdd a cd rom drive that I booted mstools 2.0 in.

I press Enter at the start and when it came to the /# I type this:

mkdir /mnt/dos
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
mfsrestore -i /mnt/dos/tivo-40g-s2-4.0.1b.mfs /dev/hdc

It did not take long. Pressed Ctrl Alt Delete and put the drive in my series2 TiVo.

It booted. I run the set up. I let it go to 51% done indexing. It seen the photos and music on my server and my account info. It worked real good.

So I backed up my real TiVo 80 gig hard drive using:

mkdir /mnt/dos
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
mfsbackup -6so /mnt/dos/tivo-s2-80g.bak /dev/hdc

Then I ran the mfsrestore on it with the downloaded image. I then did the mfsadd -x command like this:

mfsadd -x /dev/hdc
Current estimated standalone size: 39 hours
Adding pair /dev/hdc14-/dev/hdc15...
New estimated standalone size: 81 hours (42 more)
Done! Estimated standalone gain: 42 hours

I did this because this Maxtor 80 gig just was clicking all the time over and over if in stand by or playing or recording video! It's right beside my bed and I put my pillow between me and the TiVo so I would not hear it when I was sleeping. I wanted a new image and this one worked! Now it don't do the clicking any more!

I think I got the clicking because I had a 80 gig laptop hard drive that I DD copy from the WD hard drive that came with my TiVo. The spinning sound got very loud on that WD hard drive! That's why I got a lap top drive. They are super quit! But then the Fan in my TiVo was going fast making a loud sound! I can only guess because the laptop hard drive does not use the 12 volts and the power supply was dissipating it with it's heat sinks and so the fan had to go full speed makes a lot of sound!

I have a USB to Ethernet on it. I still had to put in the ,#401 for it to do the setup.

It's to bad TiVo don't like images like this to go over the Internet. The only one that can use it is people with a TiVo. It worked out real good for me. I did not know any other way to fix this.

One thing I see on post to type:

mount /dev/hda /mnt/dos but it don't work for me. It was a wile before I found out
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos worked. No on said in one line like this. I had to put the 1 after hda and that worked. I did see -t vfat but none said with the hda1 too.

I hope this helps other with this.

The TiVoToGo feature allows you to transfer recorded programs from
your TiVo box to your desktop or laptop computer so you can take your
favorite shows with you.

To enjoy TiVoToGo functionality you'll need to connect your TiVo
Series2 DVR to your home network and download the new version of
TiVo Desktop to your PC. For more details on getting started visit
www.tivo.com/togo.

For more information on the TiVoToGo feature, as well as other home

* The TiVoToGo feature is not available as part of the TiVo Basic
service on the Toshiba SD-H400.

I ran the "PowerMax Version 4.09" test on it too and it passed.

I reset my TiVo and have to see how it works. I have no recording on it yet. I guess I will record just a little and test TiVoToGo

As soon as I went to record it came back with the "Problem found" message. So I put the hard drive back in my computer and ran amset /fast on it. it said it will try and make it as quiet and fast as it can.

Wile I had it in my computer. I backed it up. Here is how my fat32 10 gig hard drive looks now with 3 files and size.

tivo-40g-s2-4.0.1b.mfs 404868723
tivo-s2-80g.bak 400455696
tivo-s2-80g-togo.bak 408494909

So you can see the size how it changed from tivo-s2-80g.bak to tivo-s2-80g-togo.bak.

Well the amset /fast did not work ether. I guess I need to just trun it off. I still get the "Problem found" message. It's hard to know if it's the TiVoToGo or not. I guess I restore my other image before the TiVoToGo update after I try turning off the /slow and /fast quiet mode on the hard drive.

I looked on google for the TiVo error Message #51 I found that delete and reset every thing fixs it! I had nothing on it any way. Just my setup info. No shows.

This time when I went though the set up it asked for my e-mail. You don't have to put that in but I did.

I Recorded 4 minutes to test and open TiVo Desktop. I got in to my computer in about 8 minutes. So I guess you can just say it takes about 2 times a long as the show in best Quality.

I could not get it to play because it asked for my password and all ways said it was wrong. I looked on line and on my TiVo same number. I called TiVo they are very nice and I found out it's a password you set up in TiVo Desktop but you have to have you key to set it up. I was using the key as the password. After I got that Windows midea player played the video on my computer real good!

I am going to wait to see if this update still makes the hard drive do the clicking sound over and over. Because I did "amset /off" on it. If I found it still does this clicking I will do the "amset /quiet" because looks like that was not the error part. I don't know why I got the #51 error after the TiVoToGo update. Great thread. I'm trying to upgrade a Hughes SD-DVR120 to to 4.01b. Does anyone know if the SD-DVR40 image will work? (I already have one) Or does anyone have a clean SD-DVR120 image (4.01b)?

I'm following Dave Dellanave's & HUGE's 4.x + Installation Guide (http://www.dellanave.com/4xrid.htm) and prefer to not use InstantCake if possible...

Thanks!

If you don't understand why "a clean SD-DVR120 image (4.01b)" does not exist, you should leave the cover on your DirecTiVo while you do a LOT of reading.

just in case you didn't know, torrent & such are NOT anonymous services. even the supposedly anonymous ones are trackable with a lil effort (one guess who's bothering to do tracking)

if you buy a tcd2400xx image from ptv upgrade (http://partners.ptvupgrade.com/z/40/CD20/) you're getting a legal copy of a clean image. (which is why I mentioned that in the 4.x+RID - files and information (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39354) thread)

4.x is designed for standalone tivos, but it happens to run on non-rid dtivo (uma4) or rid dtivo (uma6) with some help from files here on DD

I'm desperately in need of an image for a DSR6000R01. Was running 3.1Xtreme before, but really will take any image that gets me back up and running. And yes, I have checked eMule and did a global search. All I found that could possibly be relevant would be this link:

Unfortunately it doesn't look like that file is actually online - I've been waiting several hours and it hasn't downloaded any data yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I ended up downloading Instant Cake from PTVUpgrade and that did the trick. I was able to rebuild the TiVo with their image AND upgrade the space at the same time.

After almost two days of eMule running, I still only have 50MB of the 193MB mfs file. Hopefully will get it sometime soon.

As for trying the other image so kindly provided to me by someone else (not disclosing identity in case this person doesn't want to be providing images to half the forum), I haven't had a chance to load it, hopefully will get some time to give that a shot tonight.

I also found an old hard drive that may have the original MFS backup on it for my Tivo - if I find it and it's good, I'll be happy to share.

As far as I know, the T60 image on eMule is incomplete. Also, a reality check is in order. Emule is slow but steady. Better figure on leaving your system on for several days to get an image.

dsr6000 image - i did what alot of people suggested, bought instantcake. it sucks. tried to restore to orig. 40g drive, no go. i added a 10g and then a 13g, still the image was too large. i posted on ptvupgrade, and of course no answers. here is the specs:

"You will need one or two blank hard drives, the total size of your drives should be larger than the size of your original upgraded unit. We do not recommend you use your existing TiVo disk drive for InstantCake installations - keep your TiVo drive in a safe place as a backup; at least until you've used InstantCake successfully at least once."

now, i have been out of school for some time now, but as far as i can recall, 50 and 53 are larger than 40, unless some kind of new math is in again. if anyone has a 40g image, pm me. we could trade, the only instantcake for me from now on is betty crocker!

I don't think the Instantcake image will work across two drives; you'll have to have a SINGLE drive of sufficient capacity (yes, I could be wrong).

In any case, there are several images on eMule that should help you. First of all, a DSR6000extreme25 image: ed2k://|file|DSR600025Xtreme.zip|164868469|8850DD9B09BDF1AD423B113B2248A35D|h=FS2GHLDQCJB3UVPTXFGTZFCLAP6FE 4TA|/

Next, xupgrade to allow you to upgrade to your choice of 2.52 and 3.x: ed2k://|file|xupgrade.zip|54351786|62067D9B659B87892C16B67730BF1A8F|h=ROBNQMZU3AUCDXECLKWXEJLNMJPHH5I7|/

And lastly, slices to upgrade to 3.1.0d: ed2k://|file|3.1.0d-philips.zip|8603261|84EE1B41E3EC0FBEF138B0E72AAE43AA|h=5X7Y6BX7WI5R4YM7ASFO5OTBWVMB2HE6|/

I have some of the images you mentioned, but since I have an unformatted hard drive and not sure what file system to use or partitions needed, I think InstantCake may be the best bet.

I do plan on hacking the system, but most the information I have found appears to require a working Tivo harddrive as a starting point.

there is no time like the present to get started. This image on emule is for an HDVR2 IIRC. Download it, restore it to a 40 Gig (or larger hard drive using MFStools, and you have a formatted, working TiVo drive.

Once you restore an image, you'll have a working tivo harddrive. You can use the 3.1.1c image that PlainBill pointed you to, but I'd just go straight with 4.0.1b. YMMV.

Don't forget that you'll need to monte into an lba48 aware kernel if you want to use all of a harddrive that's greater than 128GB...

1. Stick to one that works. Otherwise

2. Download them all, copy to a drive, and test. Pay particular attention to menu backgrounds. One disadvantage of emule is it's difficult to know EXACTLY what you're getting.

I'm sure this is an odd request but I need a decrypted swsystem slice for a pioneer 810 tivo unit (5.2.2-01-2-275). Somehow I got a green screen, and fsfix ate my /SwSystem directory, so myworld won't run...

The filename would be like:
swsystem-33431354-1.slice

I managed to download the file I need (swsystem-33431354-1.slice.bnd) but it's encrypted with a key my tivo doesn't have somehow...

Additionally, if anybody has the value for the key SWE_B5X-1 I could decrypt it myself.

If anyone can help out it would be much appreciated...

Before I start hacking my R10 Tivo I have some questions.

Is it legal to get an Image with a lifetime sub on it? I would gladly pay for a lifetime sub but directv won't even give me the lifetime option to purchase for my R10.

Is it legal to hack the tivo so that it thinks it has made a daily call?

If the above is legal where can I get an image or instructions on how to apply these hacks?

I don't want to cross any lines here. I have been a legal paying customer of directv since 1997 but I am a little pissed off that I can't get lifetime for my Tivo unit.

Thanks for your help and I hope I have not offended anyone in this forum

It's not legal, and not possible. The subscription information is on the access card.

Is it legal to hack the tivo so that it thinks it has made a daily call?
Yes, we've been doing that for years.

Right here. Start reading. I suggest you start with the prom replacement thread in the Series 2 Support forum.

I don't want to cross any lines here. I have been a legal paying customer of directv since 1997 but I am a little pissed off that I can't get lifetime for my Tivo unit. But DirecTV doesn't offer a lifetime TiVo subscription. As far as I know, the Yankees don't offer a lifetime ticket to their games. Does this give you a right to sneak into the ballpark?

Thanks for your help and I hope I have not offended anyone in this forum

We can always hope.

Hey Plainbill I have a good question.

If I have 2 series2 dtivos with the mrv and hmo enabled. What should I put on my old Sony SA1 to be able to view the network feed from the other two tivos? Could I just put 4.01b on it? If so make a suggestion on where I could find it. I looked at Ptvupgrade. The have a 3.0 disk

I have hacked 3 tivos with all your great info maybe you can provide a little more.

It has been said "There are no s7up1d questions". I add the qualifiers: Except those which are asked in the wrong place; and those which have already been answered.

It has been said many times, many ways: The only way to run HMO / MRV on a Series 1 TiVo is to buy a Series 2 TiVo, hack it, then set the Series 2 on top of the Series 1.

:) okay well I was kinda fishing for a 4.01b image for SA1.
:o :o I feel so stupid! I read that same quote "It has been said many times, many ways: The only way to run HMO / MRV on a Series 1 TiVo is to buy a Series 2 TiVo, hack it, then set the Series 2 on top of the Series 1" :o

I just want to get 4.01b on a stand alone then I can Use MVR to view from my Dtivo running 4.01b.

DOes that sound functional to you

Is there a 3.1 image that will work on a less than 40GB drive? I took the drive out of my HDVR2 and ran it through Maxtor diagnostics. The program found a few bad sectors and marked them as such. But now, when I try and restore the backup from this same drive, mfsrestore says that the drive is no longer large enough. Any ideas?

Several suggestions:

1. Buy a larger drive; 160 Gig drives can now be found for under $50 after rebate.
2. Someone posted a minimal 4.01b image (will restore to a 2 Gig drive) on eMule.
3. AlphaWolf posted a minimal 6.2 system on eMule, again, will fit on a very small drive.
4. I have a 3.1.1c image that fits on a 39 gig drive; that could be up on eMule later today.

Bad sectors now means the drive will most likely fail soon anyway. Don't waste your time. You will be back in a few days/weeks/months trying to figure out how to recover your recordings and season passes before your wife/husband/kids/parents/siblings kill you.

I'm hacking my Series 1 DTivo for the first time, and looking for a copy of 25xtreme. Couldn't find one on Emule for the last few days. A v2.5.2 or v3.1.0 upgraded image would also work. My other S2 DTivos are networked, but I'm planning on hacking the S1 using serial bash only. I figure for the price of a TurboNet card, I could just buy a S2 DTivo on Ebay...but I'm curious what I can do with a S1. Many thanks in advance.

Uhhh.. I hope you did not pay for that. Even if you didn't, you probably now have a ton of spyware or viruses on your computer. eMule is free software, no sign up required.. Be very, VERY careful when inserting anything into this image. You can easily initiate a child process. Extraction is also somewhat problematic - especially if it occurs too soon.

Hi,

I have actually spent a lot of time just reading this site and lurking. Trying to learn. But most of the things discussed here just go over my head.
Now to the point. Where can I get a drive image for a TCD24004A Tivo?
The drive has finally died. I have little choice but to try my luck with a new and bigger drive and an image. I have downloaded and burned a bootable CD with the proper tools. I know how to connect a drive, etc. Beyond this, Linux is WAYYY over my head. I have lifetime on this unit and really don't want to buy another one. I don't fool around with peer to peer apps.
Can anyone point me in the right diection? If anyone asks, I have never backed up the original drive due to fear of ruining it. I have nothing to loose now.

Thanks

I spent last Thursday loading on a "supposedly" clean 4.01b image to my new 80gb 5400 rpm drive and walking through the hack guide on how to do so. Easy enough, but none of the DTV channels are coming in. (Yes I did the RID stuff) I have a Philips DSR704. So I'm assuming it's a bad image as I got it off a torrent (can't remember where). Would anyone be so kind as to help me obtain a clean 4.01b image? If all else fails I will grab one off PTV, I just thought I'd try here first.

Thanks!

With that said, I am looking for a image for the TCD540040. I've crashed my drive. Due to my clumsiness, i droped my "A" drive from my series 2 unit just before making the attempt to back it up. Ironic huh?

If anyone has the image in question and you feel so inclined to assist, please do so. Also, as I said earlier, I am also checking emule.

Well, I ordered the proper image from PTVupgrade.
I tend to read, and not post. But I find myself confused by all the immense wealth of info on this board. I have just one more question.
I hope it's ok to ask in this thread since I *did* get an image.

What do I have to do to run a 200gig single drive in my tivo? I have read about monte, but I don't fully understand it. I am looking for only 2 things: To save my tivo, and (if possible) to use a single 200 gig drive that I already have. I read and read, but have not found a cut and dry explanation or guide for *****s on this. PTV does not sell larger drives because of the 137gig barrier, but you guys are obviously doing this. Can someone point me to a guide to what I must do, please?

I apologize for asking, since I DID read the forum for weeks, but I just don't seem to find a step by step for this. I do have the Hindsdale guide, but it did not mention how to break the 137 gig barrier if using ONE drive.

Thanks

This (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37570) is NOT a step by step, but it does give a good explanation of what is going on, and how to do a monte into an LBA-48 kernel.

One other rather bold option: Restore the image using a LBA-48 aware cd (such as the PTVupgrade LBA-48 cd). With a little bit of luck, you will get upgraded to 7.1 BEFORE filling the drive; and 7.1 has LBA-48 support.

Thanks for the reply, PlainBill.

By what I am reading, I should be able to restore an instant cake image using the lba48 aware cd, pop the drive in my tivo, let it take 7.1 which it already received before the drive screeched. I could expand the drive before, or just wait for 7.1 and THEN expand the drive to it's full capacity?

So much of what I have been reading regarding monte will simply no longer apply snce the 7.1 release, correct? If that's so, then I think I know what to do.

Is it safe to guess that in the near future there will simply be a 7.1 image to restore from and presto, instant big drive support for ALL series 2?

I think this is what confused me the most about upgrading the drive.

Thanks.

Several points here: First of all, the fact that the system had already received the 7.1 update make things easier; you can be reasonably sure it will get the update from 4.x to 7.1 on the first call.

Second, restoring with an LBA-48 cd is a must if you hope to use the full capacity of the drive. Expanding AFTER taking the 7.1 upgrade is possibly being a little over-cautious, but it's a good idea.

Next, passively waiting for a 7.1 image is an option, but why not take the initiative? Once your system has taken the upgrade, do a Clear & Delete everything, pull the drive, make an image (use -l 15 rather than the -f 9999 switch); then put the image up on eMule (www.emule-project.net).

Of course, you can be be even more proactive. Alldeadhomiez has posted a package which captures any slices received during a call. These would include the slices for an upgrade to 7.1. Capture them, and make them available too.

Lastly, an 'all in one' image might be possible, but it would be a lot of work. DirecTiVos often get the upgrade slices from the satellite; it is possible to have a drive image which contains ALL slices necessary for an upgrade to 6.2 on any standard density DirecTiVo. To do this on a SA TiVo would require obtaining the slices for all versions of SA TiVo, loading them, then making an image. Given how rare it is to find slices for a SA system, I don't think this is going to happen.

OK! I do belive I got it. I had gotten 7.1 weeks ago. So I'll use the lba48 boot cd, make a new image, let it take the 7.1 update, check that it works right and make a 7.1 backup at that time. Thanks for clearing up the confusion. Basically, no monte required.

Sooo....the latest image I am trying is the Tivo-S2-4.0.1b-02-2-xxx.mfs (from emule). Now it's made it into guided setup, but does not respond to my remote control. My unit is a Sony SVR-3000. Is this software version not compatible? Do I have to have a SVR-3000 specific image? TIA,

Time for you to do a little research. The Sony remotes and TiVo remotes generate different codes for each keypress. Either find a TiVo remote (I don't blame you for not wanting to do that), get an image from PTVupgrade, or start searching here. I remember some discussion about tweaking the software so it expects the proper remote.

Thanks for the advice. I found a couple of threads related to the remote swap. Alphawolf wrote a script for it.

However, SR712 did post that "AFAIK, the Sony remote has not been able to be used on 4.0 and greater software.", but I'm willing to give it a try if I can get the script loaded.

I'm guessing that some of you are pretty familar with that Tivo-S2-4.0.1b-02-2-xxx.mfs image that's floating around on emule. Does this come prehacked, so that I can get a bash and load the scripts to the drive, or will I need to take it back out and mount it from my pc? If that's the case, I think I'll keep trying to find a SVR-3000 image to load.

Another question. One thing that I did differently when restoring this last image is that at the end of the process I unmounted with the command umount -f -a -r. On the previous unsuccessfull restore attempts, I didn't do this. Could that have caused my problems?

UPDATE: Looks like that may have been it. I tried to restore from my sony image again, this time using the umount command and now it works like a champ. ;)

I just finished hacking my HDVR2 with a 4.0.1b, everything looks good. Now I want to do the same to my other SD-DVR40, but am having a hard time getting an image off Emule. I don't see any 4.0.1b images for it, and even the 3.1.1's are taking forever to get. I have been connected for 5 days and still don't have one. Can someone tell me which image is the best for this one? Is there a 4.0.1b image for it? What is it's name? I can't use the same one I used for the HDVR2 right?

I can't use the same one I used for the HDVR2 right?Wrong. Use it and get the info/files from the 4.x on RID thread in the files section.

Hello! I have an old Phillips HDR-112 with the original HD still going strong...well, still going anyway. I would really really like to prepare a 120 gig drive I've got sitting here for the inevitable day the old original HD craps out. I am currently using this drive...or rather, my wife is using this Tivo unit for her stuff so I really don't want to take it apart and then have several days of downtime (when everything goes wrong).

Anyone know where I can get a drive image just so I can be ready to swap out one for the other?

Looking for 6.2.dtivo.minimal.AlphaWolf_HK.zip, which apparently is no longer on Emule. I'm working with a spare drive, so I prefer to use an image rather than slices. Thanks in advance.

I've been reading A LOT of posts about grabbing the slices to share, and downloading slices to install with, but I can't seem to find an answer to a really basic question.

When slices are automatically downloaded form the satellite (DTivo)... where do they get stored? In other words, if I wanted to check to see which slices I already received, where should I be looking?

Thanks

Software isn't RID, hardware can be. 6.2 will work with both RID and non-RID hardware. It may show your manufacturer and model wrong in System Information, that's all.

Depending on your confidence level, you can restore the image to a hard drive, install a killhdinitrd kernel, add all hacks, and then put it in the TiVo. Or if you are a little more cautious: restore, test. Add killhdinitrd kernel, test. Add rc.sysinit.author, test. Add AW's Series 2 binaries, retest; etc.

For what it's worth, I would use AW 6.2 minimal only for experimenting. It is excellent for that. For your working system I would use slices to upgrade to 6.2 from your present software. This allows you to keep all recordings.

glad to hear it works on either system.

one question some people are posting that after you expand an image
you have to set the boot partition. While some guides from earlier say different things...
if this image is put on a large drive a bootparm must be done others say bootpage before you try it out?
the way I read it was this was dealing with a monte system. But not sure if its something that has to be done no matter what.

My little exp was this image on a non rid system....did all the hacks...reading all I can.

yep new so I didn't think it would work..

but I did everything listed in the 6.2 upgrades...to get the hang of what is what.

put it in tivo ...please wait...then got a new screen saying just a few more minutes....loop back..

so I redid everything and tried again...please wait...blink please wait...over and over..

BUT I am learning what is what...like boot is 4 so kernel goes in 3...etc
at least that is what I am doing LOL

this weekend when I get time I am going to do one thing at a time and go check it....

but like I said this is learning and my 3.1.1e has not updated yet so I am just waiting for it.

and thanks again for the info

Has anyone recieved a 6.2 Sat download for an RCA40 or RCA80 ?

I'm curious if the system info screen still says it's an RCA model number still.

I would upgrade from the slices available but kindof holding out so my system screen stays the same. I re-installed my original RCA40 drive just over two weeks ago and still haven't seen the machine updated. Wish I knew of a way to force it to upgrade but I guess I'm at the mercy of D. I do force a phone call every day in hopes of it doing something.

Thanks,
Joe

Not upgrading just so it says RCA in your system info screen? that's a bit odd.

Anyway, if you upgrade to 6.2 using the slices, it will be as if the tivo upgraded itself, keeping all the RCA specific stuff there.

Yea, I'm an odd duck but have definately been called worse. I'm just curious if the logos are present after the upgrade because what I've heard from using the slices the logos are not there. I haven't looked hard enough to find out if they just pop up over time. I do have to say, it's killing me waiting because I really loved my hacked 4.0x. Maybe I'll pop that hacked drive back in and just try the slices. Heck, nothing on TV tonight to record.

At the risk of going against the old adage "beggars can't be choosers", I'm going to have to just thank you for the offer.
I have a 3.1.1b image I created earlier....

I *HAD* 3.1.1e on my HDVR2 and so I purchased the PTVnet CD to add networking/TivoWeb/YAC to my HDVR2, but while waiting for 'the right time' to do it, I was upgraded to 6.2 by DTV...unfortunately, PTVnet requires 3.1.1e....

So, thank you very much for the offer, but to make the PTVnet disk work, I need the 'e' version....I know I could go back to PTV and get it on InstantCake, but I just dropped the money for the networking script and am looking for other options for the image....Thanks anyway, Thinkdiff.....I genuinely appreciate the offer.

Thanx....Got it....Now I've really got some fun...(and a lot more reading)

I don't even know what slices are.... ?!

I was just trying to get networking (and TivoWeb/YAC) on my Tivo and was thinking I would take the "easy" way out by buying the PTVnet CD...now this has turned into a real adventure and I'll have to do more then load pre-made images and scripted hacks...What fun.

Here is my image of my SD-DVR40. It is UNTESTED as of right now. I will test it on Friday night (5/27/05). It might not have backgrounds, although they do appear to be present in the MFS, so it should be good. It includes all of the 3.1.1e slices and for some unknown reason the 3.1.5e slices as well:

Name Type FsId Date Time Size
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
3.1.1e-01-2-101 tyDb 709424 11/03/04 03:31 668

I used this very image to do an upgrade from 3.1.1e --> 4.0.1b-02 --> 6.2 on 2 SD-DVR40s..

Original size is 40GB, it has 13 partitions, so it is expandable once.

I am distributing it as a BitTorrent trackerless torrent (is this ok for the forum? I can host the torrent off site if it is a legal problem). To use this torrent, you must be running the trackerless version of BT (The first version to offer this is 4.1.0, available at www.bittorrent.com). If you have any success or problems, let me know.

I have the 311e image, all the major kernels, and slices for 4.0.1b and 6.2 up there.

The quickest way to get a threatening letter from Tivo's legal department, is to put their images up for download and then post the info on a public message board.
