I checked out dvrupgrades and saw the hr10-250 6.3c out for instantcake. I was thinking about maybe just getting that. I dont see that version out anywhere that I have been searching. It would be nice to have

Sucks to have to redo your whole system becaue you cannot get your hands on the slices, I'd rather skip it / wait for next update .... 6.3b is fine for now

Hi There,

I have a Samsung SIR-S4080R Dtv tivo with the following software: 6.2-2-01-2-381.

I heard that Dtv will be updating this software very soon to 6.2A to change the new day light saving date in the system to March 11th. Does this mean I will have to plug my box back into the phone line for this update, if so will it wipe out all my changes and does anyone know what to do to get them back.

Thanks in advance
Gra.

P.S. I know this is my first post here, I have read everything here and understand a lot, so there was know need for me to post until now.:)

Can anyone point me to where I can grab the 6.2a slice files DTV is pushing down so I can dbload them? I have a unit I use for MRV transfers only and the unit has both SAT coax inputs fried due to lightning.

As a side note to the post above, Yes you'll have to reapply your hacks.

Not questioning you or anything like that.....but how are we to be sure that this is a valid, working 6.3b?

Also on my other Hr10 I have the slices for 6.3c in MFS is there any easy way to get those out without updating that unit to 6.3c and then making the image?

In a nutshell, no. To expand on this a little, alldeadhomiez posted some information on it some time ago. (Search on his posts; they are well worth reading.) The kernel and core slices (used with 6.2) can be extracted from the mfs database. The problem is the swsystem slice is not transfered to the database, rather it is used to make 'hundreds' of changes to the database.

adh also indicated it was not possible to capture the slices as they are downloaded from the satellite datastream. The reasons are beyond my ability to grasp.

I HAVE successfully captured slices from a daily call. There is a custom kernel which will do this; I used a 'brute force' method. It works best on a system which had been upgraded, then had the drive replaced with one at the previous software version. During a call the slices are received into /var/packages. After the call they are processed, moved into the mfs database, and then erased from /var/packages. By executing cp /var/packages/*.* /var/savepack every few minutes the slices are saved. (Of course, it only has to be run once; it is essential it be run after the call is completed, but before the directory is wiped - roughly a 5 minute window).

Well they are just the slices, I got them originally from here, installed them and worked fine. That's the best I can tell you. Add to the fact I have been a member here for quite some time and would gain nothing by sharing and uploading fake files for fun.

Since the only thing that changed between 6.3c and 6.3b is tivoapp, you can copy it from MFS using TWP.

You might just want to replace tivoapp on your 6.3b system instead of upgrading to 6.3c by slices. My understanding is that tivoapp is the only change between b and c versions. A 6.3c tivoapp has been posted: [url] http://www.filefactory.com/file/f502a1/

klaroby

I upgraded using the tivoapp posted above. I found this to be a lot easier than upgrading by slices (which I did (6.2a) on my two standard definition tivos). All you have to do is ftp the tivoapp to your tivo and patch it.

I was backing up a failing hard drive with dd, and well the failing hard drive failed leaving my Directivo R10 useless... I do have the prom mod done, so I'm willing to trade for beer or something to someone with like hardware that can help me out. *Begs Pleads*

So since the 6.3c slices don't seem to be in the stream anymore, does anyone happen to have 6.3c that I could get from them? *hope*

I don't have Slicer yet, but if that is needed for whatever files you can send, I'll go get it. I would prefer to keep the recordings on my HR10, but I'm also trying to clean it off again so that I can re-image if I have to. But the bugs with 6.3a are really starting to annoy me. So far it has corrupted 2 cards, and is starting to do it's "Please insert access card" error again for the second time. Please tell me 6.3c fixes this. I know its not hardware, as it takes 5 weeks to appear.

Thanks!

it has been ages ago since I messed with my Tivo.

Last time when 7.1 came through I allowed my tivo to update without removing all the hacks.

Anyway, now it won't load 8.1 every day there is a pending restart message and since I allowed tivo to update I cant telnet in no more.

I want to restore my tivo to be a factory unhacked box.

What do I need to do, I cant find my image so if anybody has a image for a TCD24008A I highly appreciate it.

if there are steps I can take to get my tivo to take updates again I would love to hear from you.

This (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=270112#post270112) link for a 240 image still looks available. Also, check your bootpage settings with 'bootpage -p' the upgradesoftware=false parameter will prevent upgrades. If you change that you will lose your hacks when tivo upgrades. Look into the manual upgrade process via installSw.itcl.

What version image are you looking for? Pre-7.x would imply either a 5.x or 4.x image. From what I remember, the S2.5 (Gen04) did not run 4.x, perhaps they ran 5.x for a brief while? What's the short version of the long story?

Hi There.....OK short version is that I'm using Simplicity to generate my own slices as I live in Bermuda which has just has official Tivo service withdrawn. When I bought my Tivo in 2004 I used Simplicity quite happily until we found an avenue for official service. I've always had a subscription by the way.

When we got official service I stopped using Simplicity and my box upgraded itself all the way to 8.1a. Well now, thanks to our local a-hole cable company, service has been withdrawn and I'm forced to revert to building my own slices. Simplicity doesn't seem to work with either 8.1a or 7.2. (from Instant cake) The header slices generated send Tivo into a loop, like they're missing some info or something. But it used to work so I'm trying to rollback my tivo O/S to that point. Thus I guess I'm after anything pre-7.x.

Whew! And that's the shorty version... :-)

I've got a 540040 that needs the latest version, or at least any version later than 7.2 that will work with a wireless NIC. I have a 7.2 backup image that I originally used to expand to a 120 GB drive, but now can't use it for a new drive because the new house has no phone service (using strictly cell and cable) and I can't get all the way through the setup (hangs at dial-in). Need to have a version that will recognize and use a wireless D-Link NIC during setup rather than dialing in by phone. I've check PTVupdate and the IC for the 540040 uses 7.2 as well. Anybody?

Hi,

I am having the most difficult time trying to locate a image or slice that will handle all these.

Currently, I have tried:
- 8.3 (latest) - not supported by bufferhack
- 7.2.0 (orig harddisk) - not supported by bufferhack
- 5.3-01-2-540 (instantcake) - not supported by bufferhack/SuperPatch

These versions (7.1+/7.2.1+/7.2.2+/7.3+) seem to be compatible with all the tools, but for the life of me, I cannot locate it. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate this (either in slice format, image, or setting to force my tivo to download from Tivo/mothership).

PS: I tried emule as well.

TIA

You have several options. One of the easiest is to download AlphaWolf's minimal 6.2 image, expanding it to the full capacity of the drive. Then use the instructions here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50788) to set the proper hardware ID. After that, force a call to TiVo and download the 6.2a update.

Alternatively, go on eMule and get an HDVR2 image (do a global server search for HDVR2 to find them), install it, then force the call to get the upgrade.

I have had a Philips HDR112 sitting around for years that I got from a friend in a trade. He told me that the modem in it was no good and I'm sure that the software on the drive doesn't have the drivers for the TurboNet card that it looks like I'm going to have to shell out the bread to install.

Since the hard drive is the teeny tiny one and it needs 3.0+ software for the drivers and I'm going to want to hack it anyway I was hoping someone could provide me with a link to a current image that supports this model and has the telnet bash prompt and ftp and the tivoweb software and all that jazz already installed on it to save me some time? I assume I can just change the serial number to match the one on the sticker from the bash prompt.

Thanks in advance, TiVo hackers!

There are two major problems with prehacked images. First, in a nutshell, if you didn't hack it yourself, how can you hope to fix it when it stops working? And second, most of the utilities used in a hacked system are expressly NOT to be distributed as part of a hacked image.

Well that's okay and all. I mean, it looks pretty straight forward. But I will still need an image of a 3.0+ HDRx12 to make the turbonet adapter work. I'm sure I could repair any errors that crop up, I just would like to save myself some initial hours. At any rate, where can I even find an unhacked image of version 3+? That seems to be a necessity since the modem is supposedly dead in this TiVo.

PTVupgrade (link at bottom of page) and the eD2k network (get the emule client at www.emule-project.net and do a global server search for the model number) are the two best ways. Note that you can also hook an external modem up to the serial port; I'd check the Series 1 Support forum for details.

Let me explain how this works. You describe the problem accurately, we try our best to give you a solution.

Cannot find and cannot download are two different problems. Did eMule indicate it found someone sharing the file (progress bar goes blue) or did the progress bar stay red?

I'm back to beg one more time for someone to point me in the direction of an 3.0+ version image of a Philips HDR-x12 drive. I have a hard drive and I installed the PtvUpgrade InstantCake image on it but it doesn't have support for the TivoNet card I installed! It supports TurboNet and CacheCards but the support for this old TivoNet card has been removed and it's supposed to be in the standard version of the software. Hard to believe, but true. The only image that I can find on the eD2k network is that same InstantCake image. The OzTivo site has an image but I have a feeling its set up for their channel lists which won't do me a lot of good.

This would all be much easier if I just had a plain, unmodified 3.0+ image of an HDR-x12. Isn't there one out there anywhere?

I bought this unit on fleaBay and it showed up loose in the box. Stuck on Welcome screen. Argh! I have been working on it for two weeks now. Having done an exceptional amount of reading (but is it ever enough?) here and there, I have been filling up my brain. I have been trying many things that I found were dead-ends (like trying to use 62small on the HR10), but have recently been using dd_rescue to recover the original drive to a new one (wd250->max250), but since the original disk is damaged, I am experiencing a verry slow wait time. Running for two days and looks like a month more to go. I don't even know if it will work in the long run.

So, my situation is to try a 500GB drive, but I think my HR10 (I think it was built in 04) is too old to accommodate the larger drive. Any way to shoehorn it in?

Or dig up another drive while the 250s copy and try that. If that is the case, ummm...<shuffle>...err, I could use some assistance in locating a slice for my system. Saw some 6.2a slices on torrent, but are they too old? The box has Lifetime and I have registered the system already, but the lack of a hard drive is somewhat of a stopping point.

I thank those that have written many pages of helpful information here and look forward to any further help that is provided. Sorry for the long-winded post.

There are several HR10-250 images on the eD2K file sharing network. Download the eMule client at www.emule-project.net. Install it, then do a Global Server search for HR10-250.

The 500 Gig drive will work perfectly with your system. You WILL have to be careful when restoring it. I suggest using the tools cd from MFSLive (http://www.mfslive.com/), and use their command generator to give you the correct syntax.

I'm going to have to defer to the HR10-250 experts on this. I was under the impression that the maximum drive size was ~ 1 TeraByte. Certainly I haven't seen any reports of problems using a drive > 250 Gig provided you initialize any partitions > 274 Gig correctly.

Hmmm....well, a particular 'virgin' image I was trying to use kept failing midway through, but it was probably me doing something wrong. I used a cake boot image and it has worked. Finally. And wouldn't you know it - it appears that the 500GB drive does indeed work in the old unit, but how many hours of HD programming should that be? It reports 72, I believe.

It also give me another error that is pretty ambiguous and not fixed with a reboot, but I am thinking it may have something to do with the phone call.

Now, I just need to get DTV to stop charging me for DVR service since this unit has Lifetime with Tivo. Are they doing this on purpose?

Thanks again, Bill (and others). I am much wiser about this topic and am going to delve deeper.

Can anyone help me get slices for 6.2 to perform a slice upgrade on the one with 4.01? The slices and loopset to upgrade 4.0.1x to 6.3 is on the eD2K network. Download the emule client from www.emule-project.net and do a global server search for 62_dtivo_slices.zip. Instructions on using them are in one of the upgrading to 6.2 threads on the Series 2 Support forum. Start with this one (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42325) and follow the links.

Note, you MUST load the loopsets first, then the slices. IIRC, the SwSystem slice has been gzipped TWICE; extract it twice before dbloading it.

Can the SwSystem slice from 6.3c be used with other slices from 6.3d to do an upgrade? I extracted the GZcore, utils, GZkernel and GZhpk 6.3d slices from my working box.

If not, since tivoapp is the only difference between the two, I can just do the slice upgrade to 6.3c, then copy over a working tivoapp from 6.3d, right?

Assuming (ahem) that its the correct image...

1) Can you mount partition 4,7, and/or 9 on your PC (via the linux boot CD system)?

2) Use pdisk and bootpage to check the drive partition layout and boot parameters?

3) Did you put the hard drive jumper back to MASTER before putting it back in the Tivo?

4) Is your IDE cable in the Tivo still good?

etc...

opticalcarrier

1. I can mount part7 fine.
2. bootpage -b says root=/dev/hda7 alone with some hex data.
3. pdisk returns lots of data about what appears to be a tivo drive.
4. not sure. It looks like its in good shape.

I'm going to go back to my original image that I made before i started mucking with things. It hasnt worked for me yet, but im going to try it again this time using a PC with IDE onboard instead of the laptop with usb/ide adapter.

What does it mean when I do "restore -zxpi /cdrom/backup.bak /dev/hda" and it seems to complete buts gives a messages about "attempt to write across partition boundary"? Can I ignore that message?

I discovered my error that a GXCEBOT is Series 1, thanks for the info.

I was wondering if the DSR6000 image would work, it keeps showing up and disappearing LOL.

Current image works but can't create a good backup.

Not much help with posts: http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=288323#post288323

A minimal image for a TCD240 would be ideal. Not seeing a match on a global Emule search.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thx in advance,

My HDVR2 is dead. I did manage to get a 6.2 image installed but after 3 days, I just can't get networking to work on it. I'm hoping to find either a 6.3x image or the 6.3x slices since I don't think the slices are still in the stream. Anyone have a link? Is it possible to install a hr10-250 image on a HDVR2 because I do have an 6.3x image for a HR10-250?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Any chance of getting just the slices? The slices for 6.2a were around 20MB, so it might be easier shared with the smaller footprint.

HR10-250 wanting 6.3e

I finally decided to just comment out fakecall and dial-in. The slices started downloading immediately, unlike past attempts on the SD boxes to retrieve 6.x.

The call took more than an hour and was disconnected several times, but I finally received everything. There were lots of files, so I wasn't able to discern if the files in /var/packages were all slices, or information dbloaded after the slices were present. So I wasn't sure what to retrieve to help anyone else. After successfully upgrading, they're not there now.

edit: just re-read this and I wasn't clear. I'm upgraded and happy. I don't need the files - just sorry I couldn't capture them for anyone else.

The DVRUpgrade hosted slices will be probably be around much longer than rapidshare (judging by the 6.3c-01-2-357 slices that are still available).

you should be able to go directly to 6.2a, but you will need the 6.2 loopsets. If you get the 6.2 slice pack from emule, the loopset is in there. Once you dbload that loopset, you should be able to go straight to 6.2a

I thought its a matter of using dbload *.slice and then executing the installSw.itcl. I did not realize some decrypt key was necessary.

crashHD
12-19-2007, 01:25 PM
I don't have the swsystem(numbernumbernumber).slice. I have swsystem(numbernumbernumber).slice.bnd. If I had the proper decryption key, unbundling the .bnd I have would yield the .slice we need. From there, it's a matter of dbload'ing and installing.
To unpack it, I need a series2 image with "SWE_FLY-1" in /State/Keyring. That is hard to find.

Usually, a decryption key is not necessary, because usually, you're dealing with slices that someone else already captured and decrypted for you.

Hi,

The HD in my Tivo s2 box went bad so I'm trying to put an image on a replacement.

I tried the image above with the instructions linked. Everything seems to load correctly... I see the mfslive prompt, and then my USB devices are loaded. My computer does not have PS2 ports so I must use a USB keyboard. The messages indicate the keyboard is found and enabled, but I can't type anything to the screen.

Any ideas? Is this supposed to work with with USB keyboards? Are there any other images/iso/methods I should try. All I need is to get this Tivo back up to a default image on a new drive. I would prefer not to pay for Instantcake but if that's the last resort I will.

Thanks for your help.

I posted one easy way to get to a new 6.2a installation in this post (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=287182&postcount=1122) a few pages back. I believe there are other posts in the last few pages that include links to 6.3x versions. IMO 6.2/6.2a are far more stable releases, though, and 6.3x didn't add any real features anyway (unless you are hacking it for HME purposes, but then you would lose MRV).

Of course, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm on 6.3e with NO problems.

I was considering going with 6.3e, but I figured I'd ask if I could get my hands on 6.3f before I do the latest upgrade (without having to buy it again). I've previously purchased an "old" version of the Slicer (1.7 I believe) and two different 6.3x versions at DVRUpgrade .. Using the tools I had (along with the 6.3f slices), I seem to have only succeeded in keeping my box at 6.3c and lost all of the hacks I'd previously applied.. It's been quite awhile since I had done this box and am kinda dreading having to re-learn everything all over again

You DO realize that Instantcake and Slicer are commercial products, don't you? Also, that DVRupgrade IS a sponsor of this site?

Now, I'm just as willing to save money as the next guy, but asking for help stealing software on a site sponsored by the manufacturer of that software? Well, that seems to go beyond the bounds of proper behavior and even self preservation.

Yes, it is a fact that DirecTV keeps upgrading software on us. If you are going to depend on commercial software, you are going to have to pay the price. Most of us have discovered that hacking a system manually ISN'T all that hard, and applying the updates manually doesn't involve waiting for the commercial software to be updated, then purchasing it.

PlainBill, I'll respectfully retract my request, I did not realize DVRUpgrade was a sponsor of the site.. The only reason I asked for 6.3f here was because someone posted a link to the 6.3e version of InstantCake just a few pages behind this one.

It's been two years since I bought a copy of Instantcake. Has something changed since then? The copy I bought had a file in the root of the CD image that seemed to indicate it was gpl (see attached file). I've tried to read that file (legalese...ick), and understand it as best I can. From what I can tell, it seems to indicate the software is legally redistributable (instantcake, that is...not the slicer). Is that not actually correct? If not, then what is the meaning of that gpl.txt file?

All software OTHER than the image itself is GPL'd. The tivo image is copyrighted by tivo and definitely not GPL. I think that's where the rub is.

I appreciate the support folks, thanks especially PlainBill for the clarifications.

Its unfortunate that there are folks openly and unashamedly posting rapidshare links to things that we've developed, licensed, paid for etc. Especially given that I spend money to pay for advertising on here, as well as a few other sites, it is pretty insulting and flagrant.

I can only hope that if folks choose to use those tools, they ultimately pay for them.

Granted its easier than ever before to upgrade a system with the amount of information that is out there, however I hope that some people see value in the tools we provide.

For those of you who think that software theft is a victim-less crime levied against a faceless corporation, try to keep in mind that I have a family to support and several employees, to pay as well.

JoeBlow... that rant is not directed against you in any way; I'm really glad someone stepped into clarify.

Cheers and have a nice weekend.

Wow, that is slick. Also on the CD, in the root folder, is a license.txt which reads:
This file is part of InstantCake.

InstantCake is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify
it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by
the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or
(at your option) any later version.

InstantCake is distributed in the hope that it will be useful,

It says "instantcake is free software", but nowhere does it define "instantcake". I would think the logical assumption would be that it refers to the entire contents of the cd. If you're correct, and with dvrupgrade being authorized by tivo, I would think tivo would make them put some sort of note in there about the copyright. I'm not debating your point, I think you're exactly right, and all but the image is GPL, I just think that license file on the CD is worded in misleading manner.

Just so you know, there was nothing that was intended to be 'slick' about it. The point was that when I wrote the scripts, which I did from scratch, almost five years ago, I was hoping that folks would take them and modify them so that the software would evolve. It had nothing to do with the TiVo portion of the images, or an intent on limiting or promoting redistribution, etc. Since many other contributions to the community have been done under the GPL, I did the same thing, and in the same spirit that other folks did... so it would be built upon and used more broadly.

I did not mean to sound as though it was meant to be deceptive, only that it was misleading. At first read, I thought that meant it was ok to redistribute it. These recent posts make me think I got the wrong idea the first time I read it.

Understood. No matter how hard I try, things always end up getting misinterpreted (especially here) so I really shouldn't act so surprised!!! :-)

I just purchased a HR10-250 off ebay and it's running 3.1.x. I posted to another forum and it was suggested that it might be too old for Directv to push an upgrade so I figure I would try it manually. I would like to get it up around whatever is current (6.3f?), but I cannot find a good backup or slices on emule.

Anyone know where I can get it?

Does anyone have a kernel/rootfs for a TCD140 please? I'm not really bothered which version, as I'm going to let it take the upgrade to the latest version.

I did a monte on my kernel some 3 years ago, and when I got divorced a couple of years ago it stayed with the Ex. Now Tivo have stopped guide updates on it, and she is kinda desperate to get it back and working again.

If noone has a kernel/rootfs, a blank image would work too, but I'd like to try and keep her season passes and wishlists if I can.

Thanks for your help.

There's a virgin kernel inside the GZkernel slice (google for readguide) and there's one inside mfs (look in /SwModule). Both of them are cpio compressed and then gzip'd.

I recently woke up to the sound of a loudly ticking clock. Unfortunately as it turns out that ticking was not from a clock, but from my tivo. My hard drive seems to have died so I'm going to have to replace it. I have no image to restore to the new drive so does anybody here have a backup image of a Samsung SIR-4120R or SIR-4080R or know where I can find one? Please help!

yes I know.. I have hacked quite a few tivos and there is by the way the image begging thread.. there is no reason we cannot distribute an image at least offline to the more advanced members of this site pre-hacked.. I have freely given out my dsr 704 images to people.. the intent of that is to not have newbies not knowing what they are doing and bugging everyone.. I wouldnt have made it to the diamond level with being a newbie and not knowing how to hack the boxes.. lighten up...

Some TCF mentality there...seriously though, it takes 5 minutes to hack a prom'd S3 (if that long). replace kernel, add rc.sysinit.author, get rid of firewall...c'mon..

I'll see your 711 post Diamond membership and raise it with my 5120 post Diamond membership. Then I'll point out the REAL power of this board - people like alldeadhomiez who knows more about how TiVos work that both of us combined. To that we can add people like RC3105, AlphaWolf, Ronny Thunder, and countless others who have requested their hard work not be belittled by giving it away with prehacked images.

Lastly, if you're so good at hacking, why don't you go ahead and hack your Series 3? The information is here. If you look it up now it'll save you the trouble of looking it up when the prehacked image you begged suddenly quits.
