becasuse I am busy and work and once it is hacked i will put all my stuff on it anyway.. ie custom version of tivoweb.. and all my other stuff. it is just to save me time.. and I dont think giving away an image to other members who have contributed to the site belitles anyone.. yes selling images and hacked boxes to newbies does but that is a whole different matter..

The basic plan seems fine. Personally, I would have followed this plan:

Buy new hard drive while waiting for the S3.

Order proms and sockets. Practice desoldering smt ICs. (I've a lot of experience with component level repairs, but could use more practice with smt).

Hook up S3 when it arrives, run setup and verify everything works.

Copy existing hard drive to new drive and verify new drive works.

Do prom mod myself.

Since you aren't comfortable with doing the prom mod yourself, I'd suggest sending it off with the original drive in place.

When it comes back, verify it works, then drop in the new drive. Which you COULD have hacked while waiting for the prom mod.

yes I know.. I have hacked quite a few tivos
Then you know, you could have hacked it yourself, in less time than you spent finding an image, and typing posts defending the fact you didn't want to DIY

I wouldnt have made it to the diamond level...
It's not the size of your postcount, it's how you use it.:D

you are right hacking it is not what takes the time.. it is tweeking it after getting everything working hte way you want ie caller id. mrv.. msftp... tivoweb ... etc...

It's the tweaking that drives me nuts. So much so that I wrote a simple script that automatically archives all of the hacks and changes I make for quick deployment in the event of a drive wipe or upgrade gone awry.

If TiVo hacking were more standardized, then I don't think we'd have as much of an issue but I suppose it wouldn't be as fun either. ;-)

I have a standardized tarball of a root filesystem with everything set just the way I like it. Install hacked kernel, mkfs alternate root partition/extract tarball, flip bootpage, boot system, and run the scripts that perform hacks not in the rootfs (ie mfs, e.g. bufferhack, set_mrv_name, etc).

It also works great when hacks go wrong. I keep a copy of that tarball on "/", and can install it to the alt. partition in a few minutes time. I must have restored that way a half dozen times the last time I tried to make mfs_ftp do something. If I ever get that one to work, I'll include it in my backup tarball faster than you can say, "Tar!!"

If you want a 6.x image for the HR10-250, then you want 6.3, not 6.2. 6.2 is for the SD DirecTivo.

Have you done a search on 'Demo mode'? It's been a LONG time, but I seem to remember there was a menu option to clear this. The down side was it also did a 'Clear and Delete Everything'.

I was able to get the unit out of demo mode.. All I did was unplug unit and on restart it gave me the option to set unit up in "for sale mode"

also I will be making a image of this drive soon and share, of course I need to figure out the easiest way to do that.

Make the image using mfs tools. MFS live (http://www.mfslive.com/) has a version and instructions. Many images are available on the eD2K network - get the emule client at www.emule-project.net.

I need an HDVR2 image, had a catastrophic hard drive failure. Was running 6.3a, but 6.4a would be fine too.

I've done plenty of MFStools upgrades and repairs in the past. I still have the original drive with version 3.something, but I'd rather not have to wait for that to update.

Thanks in advance.

You might have been running 6.2a, but 6.3a was only for the HR10-250. Either way, the easiest solution would be to do this to load 6.2 (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=271627&postcount=929) and then force a few phone calls if you want it to upgrade to 6.4a. But if you're planning on hacking it anyway, I would think you would just want to hack it at 6.2, and then afterwards do something like this (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=343660) to update to 6.2a, so your time zone settings will be correct. 6.2/6.2a are much more stable than the 6.3/6.4 line anyway. Plus with 6.2/6.2a you can also have MRV.

You are correct, it was 6.2a, I hadn't yet updated to the latest. (I was just subtracting a version from the latest, didn't realize 6.3a was just for the HD-TiVo)

Thanks much for the links!

Is it possible to upgrade the OS on my Philips HDR212? I've installed many of the most basic hacks, but I can't see how to upgrade the OS.

It's been at 3.0 for several years, and I'd like to be able to Disable TyStream Encryption, and that's only available for OS 3.1 and later. So is it possible to upgrade the software to 3.1 or later?

And if so, can anyone get me an ISO?

S1 SA tivos don't even scramble shows so there is no encryption to disable. hack as normal.

I assume since no one has posted it that no one managed to capture the slices? My DTivo still hasn't gotten it, and I'm having major guide problems (lots of shows have been split into two entries, each with a half of the upcoming episodes). Hoping 6.4a will fix this (and I don't use MRV, so that's not an issue).

Thanks for posting these - a real life saver. Rapidshare hurls, but PayPal'ing them bux sped that up :D .

I had the drives die in 2 HR10s over the last 2 months. I could have used the pulled OEM drives to put them back on 3.1.5f but decided to pay the $19.99 for the instantcake 6.4a ISO image. What a waste of my time and money. After restoring using it neither of the boxes was able to PPP in so guided setup failed each time. I have VoIP so no real phone line - but I tried the internal modem and external model without luck. On one box I just get fed up and went back to the OEM drive and 3.1.5f . Instantcake did the same thing on this latest HR10, so I went in search of a NON-cake backup file and found it at your links. Worked sweet. Used live tools to restore it to the same drive I used for cake (which did not work with PPP) and it booted right up and PPP'd right in. I did a clear all and guided setup and PPP'd in no problem and I am now running on 6.3e on that box. When I get a chance, I am going to re-do the other box (still stuck on 3.1.5f after about 2 months) to get it up speed too.

There is something wrong with the cake image or install that hoses PPP - so folks should not bother buying or using that image until they fix it. Of course, using the live tools to restore this backup is just about as easy :) .

Thanks again!
Dennis

I have NO connectivity right now and I just want a "simple" way to make it work. My biggest reason for doing it is for the remote media and allowing me to put movies on my tivo from my PC. IIRC, the HR10-250s were the only Series 2 DirecTIVOs that did not allow for video extraction to a PC or xfers to other TIVOs. I do know that the most recent version of DirecTV's DTIVO software supposedly eliminated MRV on all their units.

Still looking for 3.5d (or even 3.5c) backup image for a DirecTV Series 1 Hughes GXCEBOT (same as Philips DSR6000).

A box with toasted modem and serial ports is not fun

UPDATE: Went ahead and bought Instant Cake, which had 3.5d on it. Box appears to be working fine. A shame, since I'm perfectly able to do the mfstools restore and all of the hacking, just needed a good image with the latest DTiVo software.

I'm bummed... I have a drive in really bad shape I'm trying to copy right now. If it fails I have a choice between a 3.1 image I have had for years but never used, or I can dd the original virgin 6.2a drive (HDVR2) I have in a drawer. Neither are appealing because I have to redo all the hacks. Then again I used a certain CD with a name that starts with Z that nobody likes mentioned on these forums.... oh wait there's choice 3.. take my other HDVR2's drive and dupe that, then delete all the shows and season passes and recreate the correct ones for this unit..

I'd much rather have that steak.

If you're still looking (otherwise, for anyone else who is in the same boat)...

This post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=6687969#post6687969) might help. You'd have to restore 3.1.1 to the new drive, hack it (a little), and then walk it through loading the 6.4a slices.

Just a few questions. Does the series 3 and TiVo HD have the same software image? I have a copy of the TCD648250B virgin image, but I thought that was for the series 3 units. Just wondering if I can use that for the TiVo HD unit.

Failing that does anyone have a know working copy of the TiVo HD image available. Thanks for your help.

Bought a TCD540040 from craigslist and activated Tivo service via the web and have yet been able to get past guided setup. Phone downloads local numbers but than disconnects in the middle of downloading data and reboots. Unit did come with a new USB wireless dongle but found I need version 9.3 to use it. So I am in a catch 22. If someone could be so kind as to where I could get a current 9.2 + image maybe this would help me get some use out of it. At this point I hate to throw good money after bad. Thanks ~

ThanksYou might try one of the "Kickstart" codes specifically the Emergency Reinstall. It's described here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=295501) among other places. The timing can be tricky but if you time your key presses right, it might save you some time trolling for a backup image.

Don't suppose anybody has an image for a TCD140060 sitting around? That or the base resources for a smallmfs image and software slices will do.

I had a computer that had an image for just about every tivo model imaginable but I've moved so many times in this last year (I think this would be my 8th time) that I think it was probably lost during one of those moves. I'd like to try to rebuild that (along with this tivo whose hard disk has crashed apparently) if anybody has a bigger repository available.

Thanks to the person who PM'd me with the image...but only 125MB of the 142MB will DL.

Anyway, I appreciate you sharing and please PM me with a link to the full 142MB file if 125MB is not right. I want to get the tivo up and running in time for all the new shows and extended series.

Anyway if you didn't get my PM about the FTP...I can use a FTP client program to DL from a FTP site. I think Windows IE will also allow it.
I have a satellite ISP and have not tried to DL from a FTP site but could try, just not sure if the delay in data transmission will hinder things or not. Please PM me with the FTP addy.

Got your PM. I'll have to wait 'till after midnight to DL, so it won't take so long. My DL speed is only at a third of what it is when I wait after midnight...busy servers at my ISP?
Anyway, if that's Ok, then I will wait. As it stands now, it was going to take me 2 hours to DL the 139 MB file with my current speed so I canceled it to save your bandwidth.
It usually only takes about 30 minutes...I know still a long time, but I only have the option of satellite internet and dialup-which is not even worth the effort.
Thanks

Good evening, folks.

I've given up on DirecTV ever getting their new HD-capable Tivo out the door (Tivo's web site - which used to say 2009 - is now simply 2010. Not even "early" or Q1!). This weekend I'm picking up a TivoHD and switching over to cable again. I also have a 1TB drive on order with a USB-SATA adapter as 20 hours of HD is just a joke. However, I have one small problem - most guides for expanding the drive size on a Tivo assume either you're copying from a virgin image, or from another drive.

As far as copying from the original drive, all of my computers are laptops. Until now, I've done all of my Tivo hacking using a virtual machine and a USB adapter (which I must say, works very well). However, as I only have one USB-SATA adapter, that means I can only hook up one drive at a time, so dd'ing from one to the other won't work.

That leaves me with the alternate option - copying a minimal image onto the new 1TB drive. Unfortunately, I haven't seen an Series3 or TivoHD image posted anywhere in here. If anyone has some tips on obtaining a virgin, unmodified image, I'd appreciate it. Or if you can come up with a creative way around my conundrum above, I'm all ears as well.

Once I'm up and running with a more comfortable drive, then I'll start looking for a way to socket/hack the PROM. Definitely will look for help there, as I can't solder two wires together without a mess and burning myself. :)

For a number of reasons, 4.x is an inferior product for any purpose. 6.2a supports large ( > 138 Gig) drives AND networking, either through rc.sysinit.author or by enable the network setup screens by patches. AlphaWolf had posted links to a 6.2 small image which can be expanded to utilize any drive up to 1 Tbyte.

The best approach would be to obtain a copy of AlphaWolf's minimal 6.2 system (there might be a 6.2a version around). PM me if you can't find it. This thread (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50788) has information on changing values in the mfs database so they match your hardware. Alternatively, it was included on some versions of the MFSlive tools cs.

Thank you Bill for your quick response. In my reply I'll make some statements but I am by no means certain as to them, please correct me on anything I might have wrong.

I have found AlphaWolf's 6.2 image along with MSFLive with the image by Drez. Upgrading from 6.2 to 6.2a via slices requires this to be already hacked and using the script that just fixes the dst issue and upgrades the files on a 6.2 without the slices also requires this to be already hacked. Since I'm new to tivo hacking I'd like to start with a 6.2a image so that if I mess it up I can go back to 6.2a instead of having to restart the upgrade process from 6.2. I've searched but not found any links to a 6.2a image. Also your link doesn't appear to be about mfs database changes for hardware models but for channel and remote issues. Thoughts?

Let's take the issues one at a time.

True, upgrading to 6.2a will require a hacked system, although perhaps not a fully hacked system. I believe replacing the kernel with a killhdinitrd kernel and replacing the files that changed between 6.2 and 6.2a would be sufficient. I'll be honest; I live in an area that doesn't observe daylight savings time, so my experience with 6.2a is rather limited. At one time there was a manual method of updating at TCF, I'm not sure if the link (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=343660) is still good.

As far as the hacking is concerned, there is no significant difference between starting with a 6.2 image and working until you get the process right, and starting with a 6.2a image. The 6.2 image WILL require upgrading to 6.2a, but that is a trivial task PROVIDED you have the slices - it appears I do not.

As far as the link, try this one (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39866). I seem to have two that purport to do the same thing. This is the earlier one.

I tried a few times to create an image from my hacked 11.0d putting what i thought the virigin tivoapp was back on and the unhacked kernel and removing the rc.sysinit.author
and putting installSw.itcl back.. but apparently it doesnt like something as it goes in a reboot loop.. this would just save me time and would be lot quicker than waiting for an update..

Stuttering is a common problem with Series 2 Dtivos (and Series 1 as well). There is no reason to believe SA Tivos of any series are any different. Over time some sectors (particularly those in the buffer area) become marginal. A two-step solution worked every time for me.

1. Pull the drive, download the manufacturer's advanced diagnostics, and run a non-destructive media analysis on the drive. This locates all marginal sectors and replaces them with reserve sectors. This process can take several hours - even more on larger drives.

2. After you have verified the original drive is working, at your convenience purchase a new drive and clone the original drive to the new one.

You can get the 6.4a slices by doing this. Does anyone have an image for a Series 2 model TCD230040?

I had a drive die in my dual drive setup and the old mfstools backup I have from before the upgrade restores ok and boots but then goes into a never ending service upgrade after connecting again for the first time...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I've created a hybrid THD / XL image for use with a THD that should theoretically restore to larger drives (ie: 1.5 or 2TB) background thread (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61004)

Anybody know where there might be a rundown of pluses and minuses for what's best on the HR10-250? Movieloader, mfs_ftp, tivoweb are the uses.

6.3c
6.3d
6.3e
6.3f
6.4a

This is all very subjective, I just basically put them all (except 6.3d which I was never able to find) through concentrated paces. 6.3c seemed the most robust/stable/snappier. I don't know; that's very old. But there's not much info out there. With the lack of much in the way of feedback, I'd say to anyone finding this in the future that 6.3c seems best.

Edited to add: Thanks jwciv. I should have remarked that the most drastic difference is the recently deleted folder added in 6.4a; that was nice but essentially already available through tivoweb. The 6.4a-added remote scheduling wasn't of any interest to me and I didn't try it.

Instantcake (cake) is a commercial product, DVRupgrade is a site sponsor. Biting the hand that feeds us is uncouth. We try to be gentlemen here. Strike 1

The hacks available here are the result of hard work by members. They don't appreciate having their work distributed in prehacked images. Strike 2

According to Merriam-Webster "accidently" is an acceptable alternative spelling of "accidentally, although Paul Brians of Washington State University, author of Common Errors in English Usage disagrees.

I'm just impressed that you publicly acknowledged the possibility of having erred.

Fair enough, I didn't read or click on everything to know about this as a sponsor. I was aware yes that cake was a product, but I have experience with other "hardware communities" that someone packages and sells something they really shouldn't when it comes to unlocking hardware. I didn't research this enough so I am sorry here.

I refuse to quote myself but suffice it to say this is the "strike" that makes me say that opening segment to this post. I did say un-hacked in my request along with the other things that may look off to you. I left it open ended as such just in-case any part of my request was unacceptable to this forum.
So, I was not looking precisely for a redistribution of someone's work. Tho in regards to a hack, if someone did make a hack and wished to share it directly, this is what I was aiming for with that part of the request. I should have been a little more specific there, but I doubt that would have made a difference.

I have seen requests for images go unpunished, why am I hollered at? Maybe because of the opening of the request options including and most definitely not limited to unacceptable items? Maybe I should have asked for an image only as others have done I guess.

I appreciate this but I think with my strikes and lack of experience here, I think I'll wait a bit. Especially since I don't know just how this response will be taken. I am not meaning this to be some rude newb post or response. I am not trying to insult the work people do in the hacks they put together.

I too share the work I put into projects. I tend to send my own work to people that request in a respectful non-demanding form in the projects I indulge in.

If this is taken bad I am sorry as it is not ment to insult. Just merely explain.

ps. unitron - huh?

What may be encouraged in some communities is forbidden in others. It so happens the smart people who have contributed a lot to this hobby want to avoid any cnaces of being accused of inappropriate behavior. As part of this, they prohibit distribution of hacked images. This IS mentioned in the FAQ. And yes, I am aware, nobody bothers to read FAQs

Exactly correct. You requested commercial software; an image of a type that is the antithesis of what this site represents; then indicated a plain image would be acceptable.

If you're just trying to back out the nopromos patch, you can just change the bytes at that specific address back to their original value:

0x00868184 "0d2939A5 00000000" //nopromos

The first set of numbers inside the quotes is the original value, used as a sanity check when you're first applying the patch. So just change the 00000000 inside your modified tivoapp back to 0d2939a5 at the specified memory location.

As we had not needed to mess with it until now( wife would have shot me if I did anyhow) I had not looked inside nor thought of backing up our Toshiba SD-H400 and it has now chosen to be stuck on the a few more minutes mode.
I am going to attempt to get to the drive with several of the tools I have at hand but I would love to have backup image as the fallback.
I have been looking here for a drive image b4 I go into the machine and all the links I have seen to be dead so if anyone can point me in the direction of a working backup image of a drive I would appreciate same.
(And she probably would have just smacked me but who knows:)
I am going to try instantcake as an alternate idea, but as this is primarily my wife's machine I would like to bring it back to stock if possible.

A TCD649080 image might work, I'm pretty sure it's the same machine except the hard drive is smaller--80GB.

I'd offer a copy of mine except I just discovered that it's defective, and since I can't get the 500 GB I replaced the original with to yield a working truncated backup (even though it still works in the TiVo just fine), I'm in the position of having to beg for one as well.

(so if you find one let me know, you can reach me via spam's favorite vehicle at coastalnet.com)

Here are some minimal 6.2a and 6.4a tivo images for any Series 2 DirecTiVo, except for the R10 or HR10-250.

I made them using the "mfs from scratch (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29775)" method. They can be restored to any size hard drive and expanded again at a later date if desired.

It's normal for the image to reboot during first boot. When it comes back up, it'll go through "Preparing Software Update" (if you're hacking the drive before the first boot, don't set "upgradesoftware=false" until after this) before going straight to LiveTV (bypassing the dreaded "Final Setup Steps".)

I've pre-configured /State/GeneralConfig (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=276353) so the Tivo thinks that it already made the mandatory initial phone call.

Remember to run Guided Setup to set your dish type/LNBs and enable the second tuner. (Don't worry, it won't ask a phone call.)

Ha! Begging. Yes, that's an apt enough description.

My roommate's mother's TCD649080 wasn't able to boot. And of course I'm their "go to guy" for such tech stuff. I had a 200G drive to spare, and got everything set up to use MFSTools to do an upgrade, but the utility has been unable to make a copy from the original drive. Apparently it really died.

I would greatly appreciate an image file suitable for use by MFSTools, or any other assistance in getting my fresh drive imaged to run this box.

EDIT: okay, now that I've read the last page of the thread more carefully, it looks like quite a few folks could be helped by the same image . . . I hope that doesn't mean it's hard to find
Thanks!

I am looking for the 25Xtreem ISO/ZIP.

My CD copy is non-functional. I checked the links in the threads but all are dead, and the copy on e-mule isn't downloading after waiting 2 days.

Also looking for a Tivo HD TCD652160 image. I have the original drive but I think something is amiss as it reports my TSN as all ZEROs.

Would love an image that works with a 1.5TB drive.

Thanks!

You've got a PM.
Please excuse me if this has already been addressed in this 98 page thread, but I have such an image and would be glad to supply it. However I'm wondering are there any security risks (i.e., my MAK or my TiVo account info, or anything) in supplying such a backup? TIA

You need a copy of the 62small.mfs image. It will restore to any 2 gig and larger PATA drive, and can be expanded to use the entire drive. If you are unable to locate it, PM me with a real email address.

I need a 1.04 PROM image for the Tivo HD.

I was able to find 1.06 bins but not 1.04 which is what my tivo is using. I also scoured usenet and torrent sites with no luck (I really didn't want to have to bother anyone). If anyone can help that'd be much appreciated.

This thread (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58485&highlight=prom+image) seems to suggest that 1.06 will work fine. I'd read the whole thing and check with some of the posters, just to be sure...

Does anyone have an image for a Hughes dvr40? I originally used the Mfslive6b-with-6.2small iso but now my cd is messed up and the file is no longer available on mediafire. I tried emule and torrents but no luck there. If someone can help me with the Hughes image or Mfslive6b-with-6.2 small iso it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Long time lurker, first time poster, etc, etc.

I am also looking for an image for my SIR-S4080R. mfslive6b-with-62small.iso looked promising, but just like bkmiec before me, I'm having a hard time finding it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Edit: Worked my way back up the thread and I found the links to the mfs files posted by drez. I'm pretty sure I can work my way from there. Thanks you very much for the files drez! I would send a PM to thank you, but I don't want to bother you.

This is a little convoluted, but it will have to do. I'm currently seeding 62small.mfs. Since .torrent is not one of the permitted file types for attachments, I've Zipped the torrent and attached it. Of course, you will need 7Zip, WinZip, or one of the other extractors to recover the torrent, and BitTorrent or one of the other Torrent clients to actually retrieve 62small.mfs

The file will be seeded for at least the next two days.

If anyone wishes to retrieve the file in the future, let me know and I'll put it up.

I also have the mfslive with 6.2 iso, but am uncertain if I can legally share that. Advice would be appreciated.

Does it matter if my drive is formatted to ext2 prior to using winmfs?

Does it matter if my drive is formatted to ext2 prior to using winmfs?

As long as there is nothing on that drive that you care about saving, it shouldn't matter. WinMFS, or MFS Live, whichever you use, should just overwrite everything. WinMFS might throw up a "drive is already partitioned and formatted, are you sure you want to do this?" warning first. MFS Live won't.

Just be sure you know which drives are which.

I would really appreciate a Series 3 TCD648250B image. I downloaded the supafly image, but it didn't work for me - I couldn't get past the initial powering on screen. My original drive was failing and it doesn't work enough to get a backup image off it. Thanks in advance.

Please disregard my request. I was able to make a backup of my original drive using DD_Rescue. Plus, I think the reason the supafly image from the web didn't work is because my new drive is a WD10EVDS drive that I wasn't able to disable intellipark with only a USB to SATA connector. I thought that if you left intellipark enabled, it would only affect a soft reboot. In my case, I couldn't boot at all until I disabled intellipark. (I used a friends comp that had real SATA ports on the mobo and disabled intellipark.)

got a great deal on a used Tivo HD unit, no sooner than I transferred my grandfathered series 1 Lifetime to it, it began to die :( I have a laptop and an external USB enclosure for it, so I don't think instantcake is an option, I used WinMFS to make a backup of the original, but that also crashed, so I believe that image may be corrupt

Have you also asked in the appropriate place over at tivocommunity.com?

The thread you want over there has a title that makes it sound like it's not the one you want.

Do you mean the hard drive from your TiVo won't boot your computer (We'd all be flabbergasted if it did), or that your computer doesn't even recognize it as a hard drive during the boot sequence?

The other images I have used have not let me use my USB/Ethernet adapter. If anyone has an image that will let me get connected I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.
