Some things to do before you even open the cover.
1. Read Hinsdale's manual here (http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/) about 10 times, think about what he is telling you to do.
2. Read most of the sticky's throughtout the forums and decide which hacks you are interested in.
3. MAKE A SERIAL CABLE AND TEST IT PER THE HOWTO.
4. Learn the basic linux commandshere (http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/basic.shtml)
5. Be paitient, do only one hack at a time and make sure to read the docs that accompany it along with the thread that follows its release.
6. Learn to search the forum with show results as posts that will speed up searches.
7. Have fun, if you get in over your head ask, in the newbie forum please.
8. Oh yea read the rules at the top of each forum to avoid being yelled at :)
- learn LINUX codes?? What's Linux has to do with it??

Tivo runs on Linux, so having a working knowledge of basic commands is important.

Okay, to be kind, a few answers to start you off:
First, 'Sleeper' is an incredibly helpful programmer here on the boards, who wrote a series of scripts ("Tivoscripts") that are collectivelly called "Sleeper's ISO"
Sleeper's ISO is a CD image that, when burned to a bootable CD, will enable you to perform all the major hacks on a Tivo hard drive
'Monte' refers obliquely to the game "three-card-monte", and is one of two ways to hack your tivo (the other being a physical "prom" alteration)
What Monte'ing your drive does, is two parts: it installs a small, minimal version of Tivo linux onto the hard drive, which boots as normal (i.e. for Tivo it shows up as normal) but then loads a second version of Tivo linux - the hacked one - enabling you to do things that otherwise would be impossible without a physically hacked prom.
You NEED to search the boards for several how-tos. This information is all here.
