Hmmm. That's not even close to being politically correct. If all you're looking to do is add a larger hard drive then get yourself a copy of MFS Tools 2.0 and Hinsdale's How To. It's got all the info you need to do a hard drive upgrade. If you want to do more than that then you will have to do some reading. The FAQ is a good place to start even if it is a bit out of date. Look in the series 1 DirecTivo Hacking forum and read through the How Tos Only thread. Then, read through the stickys in the series 2 DirecTivo forum.
Don't count on coming here to find a personal tutor. I realize the info is difficult to sift through but we've all had to do it at one time or another. If you concentrate on the sticky threads in the two forums I cited you should have a pretty good handle on what you need to do.

Sorry if I offended you,I've been reading so much info and more than half of it I didn't need.I was looking for a short cut from someone who has been there.I guess I was looking for help like I've been giving people for many of years.Your right and I'm wrong

You mainly need to read the sticky thread in the Directtivo series 2 forum that is called something like "Scripts, monte ....." that was started by sleeper and is in regards to his automated scripts. This is the fastest way to get started but you do need to read most of the thread to make sure you don't do any of the things that cause problems.

No offense taken (I realized it was merely a typo). It's also not a question of who's right and who's wrong. I've just been doing this a lot longer so listen and learn. Don't let your frustrations get the better of you. I know how daunting it is to find info here but the threads I referenced are basic to learning about hacking your Tivo. You can't just jump to the end of the story without learning the basic plot first. Trust me, the more you read and learn the better off you'll be in the long run.

Lukesoarksoff,
I've blazed that trail myself over the last few weeks, so I feel your pain.
I'll be happy to share my experience with you, and maybe with others comments I'll learn some more myself.
You haven't answered Captain Video's question yet though. What do you want to do? I know, it might be hard to do because you are not sure what can be done?
I know that you want to increase the storage, but what else?
Do you want to hook it up to a home network?
Do you have a wired lan connection or will you need wireless support?
Do you want to be able to extract video and burn it to a DVD or make an MPEG video out of it?
Do you want control the DTivo from a web browser?
Do you want to use BOTH your new Mantor HD and the original HD that vame with your DTivo in the unit? NOTE: There are some darn good reasons why you should not do this. You should consider just using the Maxtor and saving the original drive. Above all else you need to make a backup of the original drive before proceeding)
Do you want/need to have features (like folders) that are only available in the 4.x software for stand alone Tivo's?
Do you want this to be as easy as possible or as as adventuresome as possible?
I read the Series2 Hacking FAQ sticky (more than 60 pages ) until my mind urned to mush. A few choice hints may go a ling way towards clearing teh fog. Just give me a better idea of what you want to do and how talented you think you are.

Check out this thread started by another newbie.

No, you don't need a linux based computer. It WILL be necessary to pick up a very rudimentary knowledge of some linux commands.

I will warn you now that talk of using an HU card in a directivo is prohibited on this board.

1) I know next nothing about hacking HU cards, as stated by others you'll have to go somewhere else to find out about that. It is my understanding though that the series 2 machines hardware is more resistant to being cracked than older machines. Again, look elsewhere.
2) The newbie thread that PlainBill suggested looks like a good one to follow. I'll add just a few comments.
3) You'll need T10 and T15 torx drivers. You will also need a serial cable.
You can buy one from 9thTee or make one yourself. Tivo Serial Cable (http://www.tivohelp.com/archive/tivohelp.swiki.net/35.html)
a- connect your new machine, and activate your subscription. Let it call home and update it's software to the current level. (I'm not sure if you actually have to ativate to make this happen) For a series2 DirecTiVo this should be 3.1.1c . The 3.1.1c is currently being rolled out, you might have to wait days or weeks for it. I'm not that patient so I modified my machine after it updated to 3.1.1b. AFAIK, the 3.1.1c only fixes the annoying message about the programming data not being up to date. I suggest you not modify your machine before it updates to at least 3.1.1b .
b- BACKUP PHASE Now that your machine is updated, read the first few pages of Series 2 Scripts for U5, Monte and Prom with many hacks ISO (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28921) aka Sleeper's iso. You'll have to burn a bootable CD from a .ISO file. You will need to know how to set the BIOS of your computer so that it will boot from the CD (Linux) and not from your HD. Download the current version (1.02 as of this writing) and burn the CD
Follow the instructions about how to configure the hard drives in your PC.
You will need a FAT32 partition on the PRIMARY MASTER. The CD drive has to be the PRIMARY SLAVE. YOU WILL BE USING THE M option. DON'T CHOOSE THE P option.
The scripts on Sleeper's CD will make a backup of your original 40g (or whatever size your machine came with). This drive has to be on the SECONDARY MASTER. YOU CAN'T DEVIATE FROM WHERE THE SCRIPT TELLS YOU TO HAVE YOUR DRIVES!
c - RESTORE PHASE You'll be prompted to shut the computer down. Remove your 40G drive, put a label on it (date and software version might be a good idea) and put it away in a safe place. You may need it at a future date if your 120G goes bad on you or if you screw things up.
Hook up your 120G as SECONDARY MASTER. Reboot the PC using sleepers CD and follow the instructions. The scripts will load the backup image and expand it to use all the space on your 120G drive. Sleeper suggests that after this phase it would be wise to put the 120G into your DTIVO and make sure that it works OK before proceeding further.
d) SURGERY PHASE - FINAL PHASE
The 120G is back in your PC as SECONDARY MASTER. Boot from the CD again and proceed to the SURGERY PHASE. (this is all covered in the first 2 posts on Sleeper's thread). I can't remember all the prompts that are done here but again, the suggestion is that you might want to test the drive after the surgery phase and then again after the final phase. I did test my drive after RESTORE, then I did SURGERY and FINAL together. Mine worked 1st time. YMMV. NOTE. You will have to choose which sets to drivers to use for you USB ethernet adapter. You'll have to do some GOOGLE searches to find out what chip set is used by your adapter and which of the two drivers works with that chip set. You can also try searching the Sleeper thread to see if anyone has reported success with your adapter and which drivers they used. You'll also have to know some information on how to configure a lan address for your DTiVo. Again. Sleeper's thread has that covered, though it may be hard to find.
If you've had any problems booting up your DTiVo after this you'll need that serial cable to see what is going on when the machine boots.

e) Additional software to install
MSF_FTP , it isn't installed by Sleeper's CD any longer. I'm not sure why.
TyTOOLS TyTool 9r2 - Extraction/Frame Accurate Editing/DVD output... (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32083)
Tytool is a colllection of programs that will let you extract, edit and convert video files.
TiVoWebPus TiVoWebPlus - includes DUAL TUNER support, compatibility with ALL TiVo units + more! (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30564) NOTE:Tivoweb plus is for both series1 and series2 machines. Series1 machines have a PowerPC processor (PPC), series2 have a MIPS processor. Make sure you load the binaries for the MIPS processor for a series 2 machine. The scripts that this runs are platform independent This is a great program for controling your Tivo remotely if you add VSERVER to your machine you can even stream video from the Tivo to your PC and watch it with windows media player. I love to use this when I'm working in my cave (basement office)
That should be MORE than enough to get you started I think.

Get your dander down there pardner!
I don't think that Malfunct made an unreasonable assumption.
No one said that they would not help you.
Malfunct just said don't ask about hacking HU cards.
If that doesn't apply to you then fugettaboutit!
He did offer you help. He pointed you towards a sticky.
I don't worry about HU or P4 or P5 cards so I'm probably ignorant, but:
You stated that you have a brand new series 2 machine.
That brand new machine came with with a brand new P5 card.
What other reason would you have for needing to make the machine compatible with a HU card?
As for there being 10's of millions of subscribed DirecTV HU cards out there DirecTV long ago sent me new cards to replace my HU cards. I was given a few weeks to switch over to the new cards before the HU serial numbers would be disabled.
If what you say is factual, I find it interesting that they took the time and expense to replace my cards yet left 10's of millions of other subscribers out there.
Perhaps there is old hardware out there that can't be migrated off a HU card. I don't know, but that sure doesn't apply to a new Series2 DirecTiVO.
Feel Free to enlighten me if you wish.

You said in an earlier post in this thread:

and any discussion of that is prohibited on this board. I thought I'd warn you before you got yourself a ban for discussing it. Sorry, next time I'll let you crash and burn.
As far as DTV allowing people to use HU cards, that is true, but not in ANY directtivo with up to date software. There is no reason not to have a P4 card at this point, it comes in the reciever and if you didn't recieve one DTV will be happy to send you one, probably for free if you talk nice to the CSR.
As far as your personal attack on me, it was completely unwarrented. I was completely polite to you and did not imply you were doing ANYTHING shady. I was only informring you of a very public forum rule.

Its stricter than that here, not only is DTV theft talk prohibited, but all HU hacks to the tivo software have been lumped into that for the reasons you stated. I could care less what the person does honestly, but I was trying to keep them from getting banned for talk that is prohibited, after that response though I think I'd like them to be banned.
EDIT: Now I think I know how David Bought got his additude (and we all through he was born with it).
