I recently added a 160gb Maxtor drive to my HDRV2's 40gb drive. Used MFS Tools 2.0. Results showed an additional 156 hours added for a total of 196 hours. Added power splitter and upgraded ide ribbon cable. The primary drive is jumpered as master. The secondary drive is jumeper as slave. Powered the box up and no video signal.. Screen goes black. I'm obviously getting some type of feed because the prior to power up the screen is gray static.. The power light bezel is illuminates green. I was careful not to disconnect the motherboard to front bezel ribbon cable. No smell of burning or smoke.. The fan spins and so do the drives? What could be the problem? Access card? Can't boot? Wrong ribbon cable? I am using the standard ribbon cable that which came packaged with the maxtor drive. I have not been able to even get to a guide or signal strenth monitor..
HELP!!
The wife's not too happy with me!! :(

Sory if you've tried any of this, bet we've got to get you out of the doghouse - or is it the bullpen?
My favorite stunt is to install the ribbon cable upside down, but usually in that case the drives don't spin up. Just to check, pin 1 of the ribbon cable has a red stripe, which should go to the side of the connectors closest to the power connector on the drives, and to the side of the motherboard connector closest to the front of the case. My second favorite stunt was to plug the cable on so it only is on one row of pins, but that's not possible on the series 2. My third favorite stunt was to bend one or more pins while plugging the cable in at a bad angle.
Troubleshooting: Unplug both drives from power and ribbon cable. Plug the TiVo in, you should get the 'powering up' screen. If you don't - Oh - oh! Now look over both drive connectors and the connector on the motherboard, make sure no pins are mashed down. Now plug in only the original drive. Do you get 'powering up'? If so, try it with the new drive. Lastly, try it with both drives.

Try a different cable for the video connection.
If that doesent fix it, i'd hate to say it but it sounds like you somehow destroyed your tivo. Double check that mobo cable (although I dont think thats it) Also, check to see if anything metallic fell into the tivo while you had it open and somehow shorted it out. Its possible that you didnt proberly ground yourself and you ESD'd the tivo (electro static discharge from static electricity). Good luck...
ps-
You would STILL get the "Weoclome powering up" screen even if:
-Bad or no access card
-incorrectly installed/no/wrong ribbon cable

I'm getting the welcome powering up screen, but its very faint and shaky over coax. If routing over s-video into stereo, no video output.. Because of the video being soo faint.. the television will display a no signal indicator..RATS!!
How long should the welcome powering up screen display?
Its been up for about 5 minutes now.
I may need to purchase another ide cable.. The standard cable is not very flexible.. Its kind in a pinch.. I may need to disconnect the blue end from the motherboard and connect it to the primary and work my way back.
Plain Bill, I'm going to put your suggestions to use..If all else fails, I hope the warranty will hold up. Purchased it back in October, made no modifications to the chasis.. Maybe I could get it replaced.
Thanks acr2001 and PlainBill

The welcome powering up screen shouldnt last more than 2 min. Probably more like 1 min, but over 2 min and somethings definitly wrong. I dont quite understand why your getting such a faint picture though.
edit- wait...so your saying the video output is very faint, and the tv wont detect it over svideo, but over coax it can barely see it?
Thats gotta be the strangest thing ive heard all day. My guess would be that its a bad resistor or something on the motherboard.

Ok, I've made it past the "Welcome. Powering Up." screen. The box is functioning with the exception of the shaky to no video. Its connected directly to the television via s-video and coax. The video starts out shaky and then goes goes completely out over time. I know there must have been something that was shorted on the video output. The input seems fine, because I have volume and If I click list and then play on the remote, it begins to playback the now playing list without video.. I'm going to try to get it RMA'd. The big question is how can I retain my current programs and settings? Can these be transfered over to the new directivo or backed up then transferred? I would also like to wipe all settings prior to returning the box.
Thanks,
Chilly

To wipe all settings, go through the menues to 'Clear and delete everything'.
Have you tried using just the coax to hook the TiVo to the TV?
About the only way to backup your programs and settings is to use the dd command to copy the original drive to another drive of the same size or larger.

You can always do an mfsbackup which will save everything onto an image EXCEPT for the programs. But season passes and such will remain intact. You can restore that to the new drive. (Unless your current drive is monte'd in which case forget i said anything)
