View Full Version : Redhat and dvr40

I have a dvr40 and a desktop running Redhat 9.0. I tried to attach my master 40g tivo drive to my desktop using an external usb disk enclosure. My redhat would not boot up until I turned the power off the usb drive. Since it became obvious I couldn't just attach the tivo disk to a Redhat system. I reinserted the drive back into my tivo system. Now all I get is the powering up screen! What could have redhat possibly altered to cause this condition? Is there any fix I can apply? What are the procedures to mount this drive on a Redhat system? I was hoping to be able to mount it in order to update the software to support a wireless ethernet connection.
:( Thanks in advance

not sure what/why you hosed your disc, but I have not seen ANY post that suggest that such an attempt (mounting via USB) would work. I'm not sure why or how you would have assumed it would? All the hack FAQs reflect mounting the drive using the IDE interface. And in most cases booting from a CD - intended for such purposes. Of course a native linux box should also be able to mount the disc, however this assumes you have the needed knowledge to do so - being aware of the TiVos unique partition layout.
Normally FAT32 HD as Primary Master (IDE0), your CDROM as Primary Slave (IDE1), and your TiVo HD as Secondary Master (IDE2). You should not need to change any jumpers on the tivo drive.
This should be the way you FIRST connect your TiVo drive and obtain your BACKUP image file. Then put that TiVo Drive in a static bag a place in a very safe place hopefully never to be used again. You then restore that BACKUP to a new/different(preferably a larger one) drive to be put back in your TiVo.
Straying from this method is risky business; and are why all the disclaimers are ALWAYS added to the hacking instructions.
I'm sorry to say that you did something, that you should NOT have done. Perhaps some can help in restoring your original drive to a point where it can boot again, however IF you have a BACKUP image restoring from that would be the fastest solution IMHO.

ok you've been allot of help to me , but NONE to him!
I don't see how replying to me helps him? That is one thing about this forum that needs improvement. More attention is paid to making sure things are put it the right place, asking stupid questions, correction stupid answers, and less effort helping the people asking for it!
Too many 'senior members' struttin' their stuff; playing traffic cop seems like the thing to do.
I learned long ago if you are complaining about people asking for help, and stupid questions in the wrong places, have the admin/mods look in the mirror. The site is probably not setup right, not user friendly and not easy to find the answers without asking in what appears to be in an "OK" place as far as they are concerned.
so ... why did his disc get hosed?
<edit> his original post WAS posted in the series II forum ... it is a series II issue.

Correct, the boilerplate answer to that is "wait for the new server and then I'll fix the problems here". Don't like it, whine at the owner.

User error. Connecting a disk via a USB enclosure does not destroy data unless the operator is doing something wrong. Red Hat takes no responsibility for its customers' mistakes.

Wrong, it is a NEWBIE issue. A proper post in the S2 hacking forum would have included a detailed technical explanation of what went wrong and how to avoid the problem.
Hint: somebody who follows a guide or uses Xtreme or Tivoscripts is a NEWBIE. Somebody who develops something new is a HACKER. A HACKER with years of worthwhile experience in this area is a TIVO GOD. That is our hierarchy so learn it now.

Somehow you corrupted the drive. For future reference, Redhat 9 can not read a Tivo drive unless the kernel is recompiled with the proper modifications to the source. This is the 2nd time today that this point has been made.
If you were somewhat experienced then you might be able to fix the problem. However your best bet right now is to get a new image and use mfsrestore. You can post in the image begging thread for one.
And as was mentioned once already, BACKUP before doing anything! Also, this is a topic for the newbie thread. Kindly make future posts of this nature there.

Sorry for the mis categorization. You are correct I am a newbie to Tivo. But at least the somewhat acidic replies have pointed me further down the road and yes I broke the cardinal rule of not backing up before tinkering (I bad!). You made reference to images available. What specifically should the plead be. I'm out of practice in the beg department especially since I not sure what I need to ask? I am so newbie I am not aware of the proper terminology. I know I know newbie forum -- and away I go!
Thanks

THANK you, I have just added you to my ignore list; so there is no need to reply to this post, as I will not see it. Oh yes, one more thing; if you could please add me to your's and or respect my kind request an DO NOT REPLY to me at all. As I am considering donating to this forum; but others have warned me that it is really not a very forgiving or "nice" place to hang around unless your're read only. I'm looking for a forum where other TiVo users can exchange ideas, and help each other with shared solutions or suggestions.
I'm hoping I won't be treated by others they way you do, or I won't be spending much time here I with not see the need to donate. As this would be a reflection and endorsement of your behavior, and THAT I will not do.

I want to thank everyone. Once my panic attack subsided and I followed the advice of Sleeper and David Bought. I found it in the faq. The problem. I had a loose ribbon cable attached to the motherboard. The disk wasn't corrupted.
Now to get back to why I posted on the dv2 forum. I had quickly perused the newbie forum and was getting confused what was applicable to my machine because I wasn't up to speed with the terminology. I figured if I posted in the dv2 forum some informed techie would give me a terse reply pointing me to a quick solution or where to look in specific areas for proper troubleshooting.
I actually got that but I was taken back with the tirade I generated. C_Monkey is correct this site needs a footprint for newbies. Look at www.tvrevo.com site. It ask what system you have and then steps you thru the process to upgrade your system. After I get up to speed with this technology I will try to build a similar newbie startup sticky. It will probably start with tell me your system? With your selected system this is the terminology you should be aware of, then read these stickys, then etc., etc.
This is what DB did but with less TLC then I expected -- it was like "as Good as it Gets" --- new waitress: "What's with the plastic utensils?" -- JN: "Listen Elephant Girl just get my regular waitress"
Again thank you

There's always at least one troll in every forum. When you express frustration/indignation at their behavior, you feed them what they want. They derive satisfaction from it.
I myself have done it so I know a bit about this subject. I especially liked pissing people off in the goth usenet groups. I'll post something like "Has anyone ever seen a skinny goth chick or are they all fat?" and stir up a hornet's nest. I eventually grew tired of pissing off Goths because it was too easy. It was also at a time when the net was new for me so I sort of 'grew up' since then as well. People also find it easy to be rude when the possiblility of a punch in the nose is remote.

yes, I understand this happens from time to time. It's just a shame that the owner of the site has to pay the price of a few that don't see the BIG picture. The less user friendly or inviting a site is the less donations.
This site is in desparate need of hardware upgrades that can only be attained to funds from contribution/donations. Anything that inhibits that is an effort wasted. I know, that over on Shallax's forums for the Gentoox distro for the XBOX, he ask for donations so he could buy a new XBOX (1.5version) so he could work on the new focus chip issues, and in a just a few days had OVER $1000. I believe the traffic here is MUCH higher; the potential much greater.
The way I see things from a user's point of view... moderators are here to cool things down when things get heated, inforce the rules set by the owner, and make sure the posts are properly placed for both organization and nosie level on OT issues in threads/forums. What I have seen done more successfully at other sites is that for each post that is moved, a PM is sent to the author, explaining, with a "nice" warning. NOT in a public post. This has much more effect, it doesn't start OT posts such as this one, in EVERY fourm/thread - hence cluttering up the ENTIRE forum site with people complaining. What ALWAYS - confuses the issue is when NON-Moderators impersonate Moderators and begin to take things under their own advisement & rules. I believe this should be a rule right at the top of the list. ONLY moderators are allowed to tell users to post elsewhere. Or imply that Threads are CLOSED. And anyone acting to imply authority should also be PM'd and told to STOP.
Moderators have a very important job to do, and if done correctly they can be VERY effective.
As I said, I will donate and will do so only if I find that this is a site that has a future to grow, and is professionally moderated. I will not donate nor spend anytime here if it becomes clear that the inmates are allowed to run free.

Your post was flawed, I just wanted to point him in the right direction. If you were the only one to reply he would have given up and thought it to be impossible. What fun would that have been?
so ... why did his disc get hosed?
I have no idea. That is why I refered him to the knoppix thread. I messed up when I did the cut and paste into the quote box.
My cut and paste.
not sure what/why you hosed your disc, but I have not seen ANY post that suggest that such an attempt (mounting via USB) would work.
