I can get a bash prompt (bash-2.02# ) using telnet to my Standalone TiVo and can ping the address but cannot connect to the TiVo using WS FTP Pro - is there anything else that has to be put on the TiVo ?
Definitely a newbie here.

If you have ps on the box (you can download it). Get a telnet bash shell and type ps -aux. You should see /sbin/tivoftpd in the process listing. If not, the demon didn't start or was not started in rc.sysinit. Sometimes this can happen if you start a process in rc.sysinit but neglect to background the command (use & at end of line). Processing will stop there if the process you started runs forever.

Alternatively, try telnetting to port 21:
From a DOS prompt:
telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 21
You should get the FTP log in.
If not, it's not running, if yes, try a different FTP client (SmartFTP works well).
Some XP firewalls block FTP, IIRC.

I'm having the same problem. I can telnet fine, and tivoweb is working. But when I try to ftp, it hangs. I tried to manually ftp on my xp box in a command prompt and it just sits when it says 'connected to ftp' and finally times out. I tried the telnet to port 21 and the same wait and timeout. I also tried to ftp from a linux box on my network with the same problems.
Oh, this is an RCA DVR40 that I monted on a seagate 160gig drive.

Wow, i've found the same fix that most have, some pcs work and some don't. It's not that the ftpd isn't running, just some pcs have processes running that cause the connection to fail.

I had to play around with settings to get WS ftp to work. My setup looks like this:
Profile: TIVO1
Host name/adr: 192.168.1.149
Host type: IBM PC tcp/ip (this is what took the time to find a working one)
User: default
pwd: **** its actually "none" remember is checked
account: blank
Since its an internal network, no outside connection, I don't have anything else running that can conflict such as firewalls.

25July:P.S. I found that using UNIX as the host type makes the files and directories work right.
