Ok, the more I read the more I get confused. I have my 4.01b image, tivoscripts 1.02, and several nights of reading under my belt. What I need clarification on is procedure. I have read several conflicting posts about that I need to manually restore the image using MFStools, then back it up in tivoscripts, and I have heard also to delete the variables file before moving on to surgery... which is correct? I know I also have to patch tivoapp and kmem, but I might just not install kmem because I dont plan on extracting... I guess the main question is do I backup after restoring my image or do I delete the variables file?

You can do it either way. Restoring the image to a 40 Gig drive using mfstools, then doing the full sequence with TiVoScripts 1.02 requires the least thought, and gives you an image if you have to restore again.

Well, I tried it manually restoring the image with MFStools2 disk and the restore went fine. I then booted it in my Tivo and went through guided setup, clear & delete everything, then onto Sleepers ISO. I backed it up and then during the restore phase I got a decompression error at 93%. What is up with that? I know the image is good, it was just on my DTivo. Anyways, I tried this 3 times, same result. I guess I will try deleting the variables directory. When do I do this? Before the Surgery phase? TIA

Deleting the variables file won't help this problem. There are known problems with restoring backups to the same capacity drive (I think MFS tools is overdue for an update). I would suggest taking the drive with the failed restore on it and see if it works in the Tivo. If it does, proceed to the surgery, test again, then do the hacks phase, and you're finally ready to watch TV.

The other approach would be to take the drive created by the MFStools restore, test it, run C&D E, delete the variables file, then run through the surgery and hacks phases. I have used that approach, and it does work. However, I always regretted not having a clean restorable image available.
