Ok, this is really weird!
Lately my tivo will begin recording shows LATE. It actually misses the first minute or two of a recording sometimes! It seems to happen when im screwing around in bash. Could it just be that im swamping the cpu so bad that it cant get the recording started on time?

If thats the case, any tips on speeding up my tivo?

Any programs running by default that I can kill?

Thanks guys!
EDIT-- The clock isnt the problem, because I checked it more than once and its keeping good time.

This seems kind of obvious, but are you sure it isn't the program starting early? Some networks seem to treat the announced start time as a suggestion, not a commitment. (Although they seem to start late more often than early).

I dont think thats what it is. I didnt explain the problem in full detail. Even after the recording is completed, its physically missing the first 1-3 min. Forget the content of the recording, if you look at the seek bar, the beginning will not be green!

I agree, that is strange.

To answer your original question, there is little that can be done to speed up the TiVo short of what you already asked. Connect to the TiVo either via serial cable or Telnet and type 'top'. This will give you a list of the 25 most CPU intensive process'. It should be easy to pick out any that are hogging resources.
