View Full Version : HELP! I've lost my STREAMING mind.

With all the upgrades I've explored in the last two weeks since adding a Series2 to my home I've lost my mind.
I've got Sleeper's monte, ethernet, bash, tivowebplus, tytools.... all working
I was SURE that a few days ago I was able to stream video from the Now Showing list directly to Windows Media Player WMP WITHOUT having to download the file first and then play.
I can't remember how (or even for sure if) I did that.
Dementia is setting in I'm afraid.
Too many programs, too many options, too many servers that need to be started, too many directories to hide in.
Help!

wait...lemmee guess... you were originally able to stream with no problems and now all of a sudden when you go to start a stream winBLOWS asks you to download it instead and then when you download, WMP says woah woah i dunno wtf this is!
If thats what your problem is, youve probably installed a media player like winamp in the last few days and it took over your .asf file association.
Go to start>control panel>folder options>file types>click new>type in ASF>click advanced>and on the dropdown pick "windows media audio video playlist"
That should fix it.
Unless your talking about something totally different in which case....oops!

Thanks for the suggestion ARC2001 but that isn't quite it.
I did install a DVD drive and winDVD did try to steal many file associations but I set the back. .asf and .asx and .ty are all still Windows audio/video files associated with Windows Media Player v9.
I can play ty streams that I dowload using smartftp or tytools.
If I download a .asx file using smartftp then I can launch that and video will stream to WMP (if I have remembered to start vserver in the tivo via a telnet session).
What I THOUGHT I was able to do was, (through some program, possibly tivowebplus, or smartftp or ???) see the now showing list, click on an item, and have it start streaming directly to WMP.
Perhaps I'm confused. Perhaps what I did do, and still can do, is download the small .asx files for my NowShowing list to a folder with SmartFTP. Then open the folder and click on one of them and streamed the video. 2 steps instead of one.
The readme.txt for mfs_ftp alludes to being able to do this but it has a link to a thread about tyshow and the tivo binaries for tyshow are only for series1, none for series2.
Did I forget something or am I just confused from seeing so much new so quickly. I admit I've been like a kid in a candy store since getting the series2 dtivo networked.

I use tivowebplus which allows streaming through the now playing list as long as vserver is running.
You can download tivowebplus from here just do a search.
Remember to enable its streaming capabilities (directions in the tivowebplus thread)
Hopefully thatll solve your problem.

I do have TWP installed.
Well, I had that working ( or so I thought) and somehow it isn't working now.
I have installed tyshow on the PC to get the right file associations and filters.
I do run vserver on the dtivo.
If there are more instructions in the TWP thread I don't recognize them.
The TWP thread is only 49 pages long. It should only take me a week or two to read it all again.
Searching the thread on "stream" hasn't yielded any other gems.

Ya got me! :o
Anyone else have a bright idea?

I might be able to better diagnose the problem if I was sure of exactly how this should be working.
Exactly, where from within TWP should the player get launched?
What do I need to have running on the tivo. vserver?
Is there anything I can look for from the console to try to debug this?
Thanks.

OK, problem solved.
With all of my PLAYING at one point I replaced the ui.itcl module (in order to experiment with JL's thumbs setting options). That is what broke it. I couldn't find how to launch a streaming video because the VIEW link to the .asx file was not there. (like I said, I hadn't played wit this much and had done so many new things in a very short period of time I just couldn't remember what I'd done or not done.)

Dunno if anyone can help me as my problem is related. I use the view links from Nowshowing to launch WMP 9 on Xp Pro to watch shows from vserver running on the TiVo. :)
It launches small (say < 1hr) recordings no problems, but anything bigger than that crashes the WMP. Any ideas?

WMP is a buggy piece of crap, first try reinstalling tyshow, then try wmp. If that doesent fix try reinstalling vserver.

Reinstalled all three, same result :(
Plays short recordings fine, but anything large crashes WMP. I don't specifically want to use WMP, just to stream stuff from TWP over the LAN, is it possible to make TWP launch a different player?
Can I install a different codec, or something?
Anyone know why it is likely to be crashing?

OK, bit more info, found how to launch mplayer tivo directly from the command line, or the WinVo application, however it only plays the first part of the recording and the following log entries are shown:

Well im guessing the problem is on your tivo since it doesent work throught the command line. I think ive heard of this problem before but i dont remember the details. Do some more searching the forums. Its definitly a tivo side problem.

Hmm, I did search for ages, but the forums are so large as to make it pretty hard to find anything :(
Since the only TiVo component is the vserver, how can it be a TiVo side problem?
Anyone else remember a reference to this I could search on?

A couple of hints on searching: You are right - a simple search can often return several threads, each over 20 pages long. A search only returns THREADS that contain matching messagess. It is possible to search within each thread to find the matching MESSAGE.
When presented with a long series of threads, I find that looking at the EARLIEST matches are most likely to have a solution. The rest are often later requests for help with the same problem.

Thanks, but I know how to use the search function ;) what I was saying is it is hard to know what to search for. I've searched for "tyshow crashing", "streaming long shows", "ty streams bigger than 1 hour" etc. etc. and explored the findings, but your results are only as good as what you use as a search term and I've had no success :(
Therefore I did what I thought was the next step, and asked the question. If anyone knows the solution, I'd appreciate the help :(

mplay runs under cygwin which does have a 2Gb limit on it, IIRC.
But I've used WMP/Tyshow to play shows over an hour no problems?
I usually use Media Player Classic though:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
Which can cope with 16:9 TiVo video on the PC screen.

Yes, I've noticed mplay says 'file too big, will play what I can', or words to that effect, but I don't know why WMP just bombs out.
Will download MPC and try that, ta.

:(
MPC crashes out too, though again, it will play the small stuff...
I am using standard resolution settings, should I change them to something else to help the file sizes, as things extracted from my TiVo are huge - the RWC 2003 final was about 12Gb in size!!!
Thanks,
Alex

I routinely record rugby matchs and at Best they are about 4Gb, rising to 6Gb if there's a lot of build up and chat! 12Gb???
Anyways, I don't have an issue with big files. Are you sure you have the latest vserver installed and running?

It was the RWC final, so was about 4 hours long, but it was 12Gb in size recorded at best with Save Disc Space off. Once I upgraded to 240gb disc space, and had the ability to extract I thought I'd go for best possible quality, though it does mean big files!
I have the latest vserver I could find (v0.3 from memory?) but I guess I might have got it from the wrong place. Where should I have got it from?
