There is a new trick in town when it comes to accessing your hard drive in your UTV.

Developed based on the idea of adding an external enclosure USB2 or 1394/IDE host adapter to a PVR to extract shows without opening the case comes IDE Switch.

There was a small number of PCBs produced for this project with even a more limitted number still available. The cost is $45 shipped for an unassembled kit and $75 shipped for a fully assembled switch that has been tested.

How does it work?

The switch has three IDE connectors on it. One hooks to the UTV drive, one hooks to the UTV mainboard and the third hooks to either your external enclosure adapter, laptop ide device adapter or a short ide cable to get out of the case which would be able to be hooked to your computer via a reasonable length of cable. The switch is powered by the UTV and draws only a few ma of power from the 5v rail and a switch mounts in the rear of your UTV so you can select which controller is the host and isolate the other from the bus.

All in all it works EXTREMELY well and I absolutely love mine.

The switch allows me to plug 1394 into my IRD and access the drive via WinHex, DVR or any other drive access utility that can support USB or 1394 controllers. I no longer have to open the case to extract on my PVR 508 dish receiver and using DVR can extract from my UTV as well.

Assembly is not terribly hard if you can solder SMD although the added cost for an assembled and tested switch is money well spent.

How do I get one?

As above, there are only a few PCB's with plated through holes remaining. It is unsure if more will be produced at this time, it all depends on demand. The best way to express your interest is to e-mail the designer at klmjr22@yahoo.com and let him know your desire to own one of the coolest hardware hacks for UTV available.

This is not an ad by the creator but mearly a very joyous user of this switch trying to let the UTV community know of the availability of a very cool device. Do NOT delay if you really want one as it is not known if more will be made available and there are only a minimal number left for sale.
