Did you also check for shorts (my favorite)? Try a setting of 9600, 8,n,1, no flow control. Make sure the cable is plugged in all the way into the upper jack. Boot the TiVo with Teraterm running (make sure it's set to the right com port - another one that has caused me grief). You should see something as the system boots. If not, try hitting enter 10 seconds after turning on the power to the Tivo. If this doesn't work, try the same things with the baud rate set to 115000.

ok i wrapped the connection at the jack to ensure no shorting and im using the upper plug on tivo, tried at 9600 and 155200 and hit enter after 10-15 seconds of boot up of tivo, still nothing.i read about a null modem adapter? do i need this ? i know for sure my jack is wired to the serial plug correctly... thanks for the help.

Actually I almost posted a question to the board myself before I figured out my com ports were disabled. Might be worth a look just to be sure :)

but to answer your other questions... the only reason you would need a null modem adapter is to take the serial cable TIVO gave you and make it work with no modification. (it flips pins 2+3)
If you have it wired correctly then you should need nothing other than the serial end and the headphone end. (you wired 2+3 differently than the given cable)

Try this: Short the tip to the middle ring. Type something on TeraTerm. Can you see it echoed to the screen?

well i shorted out the tips like u said and when i type a word it shows up in the tera term window is that what it suppose to do? if so anything else that i could be overlooking?it seems like this is so easy from all the reading that i have done but yet im having so much difficulty. if it aint the serial cable what else could it be? thanks for any help ahead of time...

Well, that test eliminates most of the stuff with the computer and teraterm. It doesn't eliminate the chance you reversed pins 2&3. At this point I would be inclined to consider Greeks' suggestion that it was a bad serial port.

I understand your frustration, I've had weeks when it seems I'm getting further from my goal all the time.

well i took into consideration that pins 2 and 3 were reversed so i got a null modem adapter and tried it still didnt work.compwiz did my upgrade. is there a way to check the operation of the serial on the tivo ? maybe check voltage on the 2.8 mm plug on the back? any suggestions will be apprciated..
