I have been reading the forums, however it seems to me that some have accomplished (or at least they have said they did) the hacking of the DVR-40's via sleeper's iso with the RID security chip within them. However some posts claim that it can't be done. Bottom line can it be done successfully with the RID chip and the current firmware on the unit? I guess what I am asking is this unit easily hackable like the hdvr2s and dsr7000 are?
thanks a million!

Yes, they are hackable. The only limitation is you can't use 4.0 software.

Yes, they are hackable. PlainBill
I was and consider myself a newbie, but thanks to Plainbill and others who have posted on this forum I have been able to hack my SD-DVR40! I'm running 2 units, both monte'd, upgraded to 160gb hds, telnet access, ftp access, transfer recordings via mfs_ftp, and successfully burned DVD's. Now maybe to the next step, tivoweb.
Again, yes it is hackable!!
I suggest to read, read, read.

It took a bit of reading and many times with the unit taken apart down in the basement before I figured out what the heck I was doing with hacking my SD-DVR40 Hughes unit, but yes it is possible!!!!

Heck, that's the fun part!!! Especially when you are wondering if you will ever get it working again.

Yeah it was fun I will admit until my wife started getting angry at me for having the tivo in the basment. It was a relief to get it on the network so I could hack it from downstairs!!!!

That would be great, all I want to do is get the usb ports up and working so I can get the updates via the net!
