I have just purchased a tivo series 2 and was looking to make some upgrades on it however, when I read posts I dont understand anything about what you are saying most likely due to the fact I dont know what anything is. If it was plain english like "to use a larger harddrive you need to do the following." it would be easier to follow. Also I do not know what options/upgrades I have available to me. Can someone please make a list of the name and what it does and what order they would have to be preformed so I can understand what I am reading. Like GI Joe always said "Knowing is half the battle."

I will be glad to help. READ THE FORUMS!!!!!
Just kidding man. I understand how you feel. I am currently hacking my Tivo. Upgrading to a bigger drive is supper easy. You just need to find the Sleeper ISO file and boot your PC with it and follow the insctructions. So far the best way to learn this that I found is by doing stuff is by doing. I would first use Sleepers ISO and FTP to my Tivo then HTTP to it. After you can do that go from there.

You have a lot of searching and reading to do.
The first thing you want to search for is BlessTiVo. This is the tool that lets you add a second drive to your TiVo.
The second thing you want to find is mfstools. This tool lets you backup and restore software images off of your TiVo. It also lets you expand a smaller image (40 hour) onto a larger drive (120 GB)
The third thing you'll want to look for is the Sleeper ISO thread. It has a lot of good information that you will need to do any hacking to your Series 2 box. The "monte" hack must be mastered before any of the others can be done.
Do some searching and read about those three things, then you will have a better idea about what kind of questions to ask.

Thanks for the input. I understand that I have to read just did not know where to start and now that I have a starting point I will get to it. One last question before I start tho, you mentioned adding a second drive. I thought I was to replace the first drive with a larger drive not add a second drive.
edit: as a last thought should I connect my tivo and update it and purchase my lifetime subscritption before I do anything else aka hack it.
Thanks for the info. Might not see me post again for a few reasons. 1) I work 45-60 hours a week and go to college full time 2) lots of reading to do 3) because of the first reason I wont have lots of time to do number 2.
Thank you

I would keep your original hard drive as a backup. I used the SLeeper ISO to replace my original 40gig drive with a 120gig drive. This was very VERY easy with the SLeeper ISO. If I were you that would be my first task.
I am now working on getting my video files off of my Tivo. I will admit this is not as easy as I thought it was going to be but I am never going to quit.
