TIVO Telnet

Do you have to have the tivo hooked to the computer to telnet or can you do it through ip? I've gotten a bash from the custom cable but me tivo is all hooked up and if i don't need to i'd rather not move it.

The serial cable is for you if you can't get your Tivo to network and for figuring out what your Tivo is doing. I never used one and I am Telneting right now. I just used the SLeeper ISO and after installing the hacks I was able to make a Telnet connection.

and you can edit files and install hacks that way too? I was under the impression it was only through serial. If not, what hacks and pograms do i need to telnet over ip?

Keep in mind I am a n00b at this but I am under the impression that serial and telnet are 2 different ways to gain access to a comand prompt. So far I have been able to install the haxs without a serial cable and think I will not need a serial cable unless I screw up my telnet access.

You are correct, if telnet keeps working there is little if no reason to use a serial connection.
