You guys have one hell of the forum going here. Thank you so much for making this kind of information available to all of us...
Newbie...wanting to store old shows on my PC. I've read several newbie guides and step by step tutorials both offered by some of the experts here and on other google searches. All lead back to here in some form or another.
Unfortunately, the bulk of those docs require a bash prompt via telnet/ftp already available. Any reference for how to do this usually directs you to the Tivo Network Hack How to by Steve Jenkins. Other great step by steps are also available. All seem to be specific to Series 1 models.
Now I'm not going to ask for a specific doc for Series 2 as that will spoil all the fun, not to mention create a few flames, but I was hoping you guys could answer a couple of concerns so as I can continue reading without misinterpreting information.
From what I understand, the main difference between this configuration for Series 1 and 2 is that Series 2 requires noscramble.o to be installed. If this is true, can I use the Steve Jenkins doc on a Series 2 to simply create the bash prompt and telnet to my TIVO? And then make any appropriate corrections directly from the PC through the network?
Otherwise, can any simple adjustments be made to this doc to suit the Series 2 (if it can be included here great, otherwise I'll assume I need to keep reading).
I have found some docs for creating a bash prompt on a Series 2, but they are way more complicated than Steve's as they seem to setup a lot more things that I don't think are necessary for simply transferring video files.
Again, I really appreciate any help you can provide as I have been on here for several hours and I am very, very overwhelmed.

1. First step is to get a comand prompt with either a Telnet connection or through a serial cable. I used the Sleeper ISO to run the hacks for me that enabled Telnet, FTP and HTtP.
2.Read the appropreate thread in the extraction area of this forum. I belive there are 2 different things to read up on. Applying a hack so the shows are not recorded as encrypted files and Extracting video that has already been encrypted and decrypting it.
3.Try and install the hacks for what you are doing and try to trouble shoot it if it does not work.
4. If you can't get it to work come here in the n00b section and ask a specific question concerning your problem.
Edit: MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO MAKE A BACKUP
I totally understand how you feel with being overwhelmed. I just started this new hobby last week and I felt the same way ( and still do a little ). My advice is just start hacking. Sure you going to mess up alot and your hacks will not work at first but you will learn alot better than just reading these forums. Its like math, you can read in a book all day long how calculus works but you have to do problems to really learn how it works.

You forgot the most important. Make sure you have a backup image.

Thank you so much for the quick repies. My fear is that I get down and dirty and I mess it up just enough not to work again. I can't even imagine life without TIVO, even for a few days.
I guess if I do a backup, I can always restore the orginial configuration, is that correct? So I have plenty of muligans.
mcmikemc, must to make sure. I can use Sleeper ISO to automatically set me up for telnet access on a Series 2...correct?
Once this is down, all other appropriate actions can be doen via my PC to TIVO connection...correct?
Thanks in advance.

My suggestion is to TEST first... I too wanted to do the same too, but...
the problem is... I tested this before I messed with my tivo drive...I added a new hd, recorded some shows, applied sleeper's iso to monte it, then before it was complete, I got an error and it would not allow me to go further (something didn't match and it exited out) something to do with the kernel if I remember ...I would have messed up my original tivo HD, had I proceeded by NOT testing first!!
ALWAYS test first if you can before messing with things you consider valuable! Luckily I did, to me its not work the hassle!
Since then, I appiled monte, ftp, telnet and mfs_ftp and can tranfer my shows to pc with my NEW HD, but in the meantime, I'm swapping my older HD, capturing my recordings and burning to DVD... not worth the risk of losing all my shows.
Just a thought!
Good luck!

I am new to all of this - so this is probably a stupid question. Please forgive me. I plan on using the Steve Jenkins method to my Sony SVR-3000 TiVo Series 2 DVR so that I can transfer my shows from my Tivo to my pc and recorded on to a DVD Burner.
How do you create a backup image of my Tivo? - is this listed in the Jenkins tutorial?
Will I lose all my shows when I do this?
I plan on buying one of those Upgrade kits - so which is the best way to do this? so should I do the back up with the new Hard drive I get from the kit?
I hope I make sense?
To sum up:
I basically want to keep the shows that are currently stored on my tivo series 2 DVR and transfer them to my PC - (I already have the TiVo on my home network-through a wireless connection) and then onto a DVD.
Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer.

I vote for making the backup before doing anything else if you have a working system and you don't already have a backup (you should have one from before you installed any hacks, right? :) ) After you successfully add the extra drive, you should backup again and keep all these backups around (I burn 'em onto CD-R) and label them so that you know when you made each of them and what the system was at the time. These are only suggestions, but they will keep you from trying to load some emule backup onto your system that you don't know what system it came from originally.
