I've seen some info about Tivo being able to be connected to my home network, but I can't figure out how do it it and what I would use it for other then the updates. I have both a wirless and a wired network and could easily hook it into the wired network, is it was possible.
Also it runs so slow, is there a way to speed it up?

A fellow marylander. You can network (wired or unwired with the right adapters) a HDVR2 to enable telnet access and ftp access which help you add other hacks such as extracting shows to your computer and controlling your tivo with a browser.
If you mean the now playing list is slow, you can reduce the number of listings.

Ok, how do you do it? I hear some people just plugging a USB device into the box and going with it. Mine didn't respond to that concept.
The whole box runs a bit slow, menus lag for a moment and etc.

If you had a stand alone tivo running 4.x software and you plugged in a supported adapter then you would be good to go.
But for your HDVR2 start reading the sticky thread labeled SLEEPER ISO http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28921
There are some gotchas you'll find along the way: kmem hack is outdated, mfs_ftp kit is missing, tivoweb is not the latest.
And do some searches (try the advanced search and choose display posts option) on the usb adapter you have to see if there are drivers that support it.
I'm a newbie too so YMMV etc. But I was in a similar position a month ago.
