ok i'm having a lot of problems (and I know they are because of my stupid mistakes and my lack of knowledge when dealing with linux )

I have a dtivo series 1 running a 60 gig HD and i wanted to add a 40 gig HD to it my goal was to have 100 hours of recording time

so I went through MFStools and made a backup of the 60 gig drive. I tried to copy that to the 40 gig but the image was too big for it (as instructions stated)

then for some reason after being rejected by MFSrestore , i tried msfadd to add the extra drive to the 60 gig and it worked sort of. It said 57 hours + 1 now 58 hours

now i forgot to unlock the 40 gig drive (that i took from my sat-t60 tivo) but what i really found strange was the the fact that i had only 35 hours recorded on the 60 gig HD and it was saying that it was full but mfsadd said there was 57 hours of recording time prior to adding the 40 gig drive

so I gave up I put the 60 gig in the Tivo and tried to boot it up and it would restart all the time after the second screen (ALMOST THERE)

I unlocked the 40 gig and then tried using mfsadd again and received the error "there is nothing more to add"

so then i tried adding both drives to the tivo master(60) and slave(40) and i got a green screen of death saying leave tivo on for 24 hours w/ phone line connected

so what did i do wrong and how do I correct this

It sounds like you tired to backup the entire 60gb hd to the 40gb hd, which of course if impossible. I hope you made the "actual" image of your hd using the ---- mfsbackup -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc ---- assuming you connected it to a "backup" C: (fat32) drive.

This would have created your tivo image which would have been around 600mb or so, which would have been able to fit on a CD. Anyways...did you do this????

Obviously you couldn't restore the image to the 40gb hd, but testing your tivo image is CRUCIAL!!!

I don't think you can add a "smaller" secondary/slave HD? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you successfully backed up your 600mb or so tivo.bak image, I would think you could restore the image back to you 60gb hd, as before and you should be back where you first started......assuming you have a successful tivo.bak... or at least did that step correctly. If not....hmmmm... hopefully you can get a tivo image somewhere... and your tivo is not an R.I.D!

Then I would suggest getting a larger HD....

i did the back up fine , I think it was rebooting (when it only had the single HD installed (60 gig)) because it was looking for the second drive which wasn't hooked up

is there anyway I can get rid of the second drive like mfsadd gives u a second drive or lets the tivo know there is a second drive is there a command that deletes that drive from the tivo ?

if not and i restore the backup on the original 60 gig will I lose my recordings ?

and finally if i'm simply adding another HD for more recording space why does size matter ?

thanks

Your're right... I don't think it matters, I just had a brain fart...was posting several replies at once...anyways..

not sure about removing the mfsadd feature.

They are now considered "married"... poor tivo :( anyways.. you have to "divorce" them, which I'm not sure you can do that. You right, you would have to restore the original image back to you 60gb to start over again... and yes... say bye bye to the recordings. The only way that would work, that is to back up a 40 & 120 gb, would be to "TAO" copy both drives to another larger drive(s), which 137 is the largest and I don't know if a 160gb hd would work, so you'd have to have 2 hd's.. by then... what's the point.

I tested this myself, did some test recordings one two hds, tried to backup to a larger hd with recordings, but recordings gave me an error during playback as if they were not there. Try the "Hindsdale how to" I think that talked about backing up a 2 drive tivo and stuff.

i think the problem may only be in the second tivo drive , i have a hughes dtivo series 1 , and i grabbed the hard drive from my SAT-60 dtivo that i'm not using. I thought I cleaned and erased everything from that hard drive but maybe i didn't

ok lets say that I have a brand new in the box 40gig hard drive and i want to add it to my single drive tivo

what would i have to do to the hard drive to make it compatiable with the tivo ?

would I just run mfsadd and marry them or would i have to go back and install xtreme 2.5
