I have a cachecard with the integrated ethernet port connected to one of four ports my DSL router. The router indicates a link light for tivo although I can't ping anything to or from the tivo. I also have two PC's connected to the router with static IP's which can reach each other and the internet. I have configured my tivo network connection for the following:

IP: 192.168.1.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
GW: 0.0.0.0

and I have also tired giving my tivo a static IP w/ all of the correct Subnet and gateway IP's. Still I cannot ping anything. my current ifconfig indicates the following:

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3584 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 coll:0

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0B:AD:14:68:84
inet addr:192.168.1.5 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 coll:0
Interrupt:2

What in the heck am I doing wrong? I cannot get anything to work...

Please, any help would be appricated, I have been working on this for 3 days now with no success.

THANKS!

Any chance that your router is trying to DHCP an address for the TiVo? Have you tried a port scanner or the router's logs to see what address it thinks the TiVo is (you said it had a link light, so it might think it knows the right address too). My router doesn't tell me about addresses it has assigned (AFAIK) so I use a file called Angry IP scanner (http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan/). One more thing..are your ports open on the router to the TiVo?

It could be a firewall problem.

What's the IP address you use to set up your router from your web browser? This is the IP address you need to use for your default gateway address. The addresses you're using look like they're the same as my Linksys router and the router's IP address is 192.168.1.1. If that's the same for your router then you need to use this address as your default gateway instead of all zeroes.

I know my router has only the basic/lowest level fireware enabled, and I beleive the router IP address on the LAN side is 192.168.0.1 I will try setting the gateway to this address. Also, the IP scanner seems like a good idea too, thanks for the link. I don't know how to check if the port is open on the router, I will look through the configuration and see if I can find anything...any suggestions.

I will give all of this a try tonight, thanks for all of the help.

If your router IP address is 192.168.0.1 then you should probably change your Tivo's IP address to match (i.e. 192.168.0.5). If your router assigns addresses dynamically (probably in the range of 192.168.0.100 through 149) then you might want to assign a static IP above this range. It probably won't make much difference but it's always worked for me.

Well, I still got nothing?!? I set the gateway to 192.168.0.1, and changed my tivo to 192.168.0.5, tried pinging it to and from the tivo and nothing. I received the following from my PC when I pinged the tivo:

Request timed out.
Reply from 192.168.0.1: Destination host unreachable.
Request timed out.
Reply from 192.168.0.1: Destination host unreachable.
Request timed out.

I don't understand why the ping indicates "Reply from 192.168.0.1: Destination host unreachable", thats my router IP/GW? I verified all of the settings on the config file to have the correct IP, GW, Subnet...weird.

The IP scanner is a cool program, although it indicated that the tivo address as "DEAD"

Double check that your subnet mask is set the same on all nodes on the network. You don't even need a default gateway to ping a node on your own segment, but if the subnetting is wrong, it might think it has to go thru the default gateway to get there.

Dear sir,

Once again I am forced to correct your bad advice.

The default gateway does not need to be the same on all nodes. The user should only be checking to see if both hosts are properly configured to route packets destined for the other node through the LAN interface rather than through the router. The subnet masks need to be checked for correctness, but not necessarily for equality.

And once again DB you can't read. I said the subnet has to be the same. And if it was truly your wish to be helpful, why didn't you post a reply to this guy sooner?

Dear sir,

I set the subnet to that of the other PC's on the network (both currently have static IP's), and I still got nothing. I then assigned a static IP to my tivo, still nothing.

Dear sir,

Please clarify: is your subnet 192.168.0.0/24, 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.0.0/16, or something else? You seem to be mixing and matching 192.168.1.x and 192.168.0.x; is this intentional?

The subnet for the other PC's on the network is 255.255.255.248. I have tried so many different IP addresses...I beleive that the mixed IP's you asked before was just one of the attempts at setting the IP. I currently set my tivo with a static ip, my other PC's on my network all have static IP's and work just fine. Although, tivo is still not working?!?

Dear sir,

It is our recommendation that you take a logical, premeditated approach to numbering hosts on your LAN, rather than randomly changing settings as Ms. Lamp had suggested. For instance, write down each host's IP configuration on paper prior to implementation. Here is a simple example:

Router, internal interface: 192.168.0.1, netmask 255.255.255.0
PC: 192.168.0.2, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1
Tivo: 192.168.0.3, netmask 255.255.255.0

"Ms." Hahaha. Innocent typo or first 'personal attack' slip-up of this new persona? The answer is obvious, but innocent 'till proven guilty, or something, and definitely the best entertainment this side of Scores.

Does the "our" in your statements represent the forum, or the sum of your characters?

Changed tivo to the IP's you suggested, unfortuantly it still won't respond to a ping?!?

Sorry, the reference is to a lamp designed by George Nelson, as seen here (http://www.ylighting.com/nelson.html), and a 50's original hanging in my house.
