I've been lurking on the board for a week or so, and I'm interested in hacking my Tivo to get TivoWeb, and maybe video extraction down the road.

I have a standalone Series 2, which I've upgraded to a total of 180G (Original 60G and added 120G).

I've seen various posts talking about disabling the call-in to prevent software updates from overwriting the monte'd system. Am I missing something? If that system won't call in, how do you get programming guide updates?

Also, I presume that if you want future Tivo software updates, you could undo the monte process, get teh updates then re-monte the system.

Finally, it sounds like a monte'd system can't be backed-up using mfstools, am I getting that right?

Sorry if these topics have been covered, but I haven't found a clear summary of the limitis placed on a system after it has been monte'd.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide, or point to the right thread.

I *believe* this only applies to DTiVos, not Standalones.

I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

If you are interested, here is how to back up your Monte system

There is an option in the boot params I believe that can set Installupdates=false that will prevent update installation but not download/reboot. Also people are working on scripts that allow you to handle dynamic updates of monte'd systems. Meaning you wait until you are pending reboot for an update, then do the script steps, and you take the update without ruining your monte setup or buggering up your hacks.

There are also people developing updates to mfs_tools that allow proper backup of a monted system.

It seems that those are the major limitations to a monted system that you mention and while its true they are issues, they can be worked around. The monte'd system allows you far more freedom in the types of hacks you can perform on a series 2 machine however.
