Not sure why you need to "copy ftp files to hdd in order to telnet"?
Just run an FTP program, and tell it to FTP to your Tivo's IP address.
If you can not do that, then you need to give more information, i.e. how you hacked your tivo? have serial bash? can you telnet in? ftpd running?

waruwaru,
thanks for your reply. what i meant was that, according to what i've been reading in the forums, you need to install "ftp server" files on the tivo drive in order to be able to extract files from the tivo to a windows pc. is this correct?

Actually, the FIRST thing you need to do is to hack your Tivo so that you can "get into" it in the first place. Check out the "Sleeper's ISO" sticky thread in the Series 2 Support forum.

No problem. But maybe you need a couple of clarifications. If you use the Sleeper ISO to hack your Tivo as suggested by psxboy, then it will install an ftp server for you. When you turn on Tivo with the correctly hacked hard drive, you will be able to telnet and ftp into it. Then you need to install mfs_ftp to extract the videos out (or you can install the latest tytool instead). The mfs_ftp server is not the same program as an ftp server. Although you use an ftp client (like ws_ftp) to access them both.
