I was thinking and came up with a great idea. Since the tivo is always I think it would be a great idea if there was a program that could use on of the tivo's usb ports as a print server. If there is a program like that please let me know.

Who moved this? Moderator please PM me with a reason.

I moved it.

Are you sure you are in a position to demand a PM with an explanation?

How's this: I'll answer in public so that others may learn from your mistake.

You had a dream about something you'd like your Tivo to be able to do. Since there is no such thing, this post obviously did not belong in the Support forum, and since you had no plans of developing one, it did not belong in the Development forums.

Since you didn't know that this thing did not exist, you must be a newbie. That along with your post count lands you here.

Do you find something distasteful about your post being moved to Newbie? Because if you do, that makes you a newbie, and therefore, lands you HERE.

Hey there is no reason to get all mad about it. I was confident that there was no print server program but I was not 100% sure. So that is why I said if there is a program then please let me know. Seconded I posted it in the developer forum because I DID NOT plan to write a program. That would give the people who do program an idea. I did not ask to talk about this publicly I asked to talk about it privately. How am I supposed to know who moved it? Just because I do not know of the latest tivo program does not mean that I am a newbie. Finally I have to say you must be one of the rudest moderators I have ever met. I really do not appreciate you flaming me publicly you are a moderator and you are acting like you are 10 years old. Just because someone questions your actions does not mean you can go all out on them. That is life and people are going to do that.
What the hell do you mean am I in the position to demand an explanation? Hell yes I am every member on this forum has the right. Whether they just signed up or have been on here since it started. If it was not for us you would not have a job.

Holy craptastic. People actually believe that there are 'rights' related to this forum? And that JJBliss makes a living off this thing? How old are you?

Hey there is no reason to get all mad about it.
I'm not mad. Just explaining where you went wrong.

The Develpment forum is not a place for you to request work FROM the Developers. It is a place to develop software, not support requests. Re-read the description.

I did not ask to talk about this publicly I asked to talk about it privately. How am I supposed to know who moved it? Just because I do not know of the latest tivo program does not mean that I am a newbie.
It's none of your business WHO moved it, just know that it was moved. Moderators move things all the time to keep forum content properly categorized. Your post was improperly categorized. I moved it. The fact that you "...didn't know of the latest tivo program", does not make you a newbie. The fact that you're a newbie, makes you a newbie. Moreover, the fact that you mouth off about it, makes you a bad newbie.

Finally I have to say you must be one of the rudest moderators I have ever met. I really do not appreciate you flaming me publicly you are a moderator and you are acting like you are 10 years old. First of all I don't care what you think. Second, I didn't flame you. Grow a thicker skin. Who's really acting like their 10 years old now? You thought that was "all out". You ain't seen nothing yet.

What the hell do you mean am I in the position to demand an explanation? Hell yes I am every member on this forum has the right. Whether they just signed up or have been on here since it started. If it was not for us you would not have a job.
Welcome to dealdatabase. If not for you, I would still have a job. Trust me. In fact, i'll bet you my WHOLE salary that I would.

In this forum, folks don't question moderators, much LESS administrators.

I'm sure you will have a long frutifull career here at ddb, as long as you'd like. Just try not to question the moderators actions. They all do what is right for the forum. Really they do. It's kind of a rule we have (basic forum netiquette, I think). If you continue to violate that rule, I'll ban you.

Enjoy dealdatabase.

Ok, I am sorry I did get a little mad. I was not requesting work done just giving an IDEA. :) Let’s just put this all behind us. I really do not want to start a flaming war. I bet you would still have a job. But why can’t I question an administrator?

Apology accepted.

You shouldn't question an adminstrator, or a moderator since they are effectivley the owners/police and management of a forum. I know you were under the impression that these are public forums, but they are not. They are quite private, we just allow you to log in, read and post. Very generous, if you ask me.

You are a guest in these 7 people's "home". You should do as you're told, and respect their wishes. If they move your jacket to the other chair, don't ask "why?", just be happy that you're allowed to have your jacket in their house at all...

Ya understand?

You, me, the moderators, and all the others are here by the grace of the guy with the power plug. The word of the moderators, administrators and forum owners are final.

good enough?

Now let's move a long to bigger and better things, k ?

In the hope that this thread turns into something productive...

The Series 2 TiVo is a Linux machine with a USB interface. Thus you can run a print server from it if you install the appropriate software.

The software you will want to use is printer.o (kernel module for USB printers), BSD lpd / lprNG / CUPS, and probably magicfilter. You will need to either cross compile this software, or install a binary distribution like Debian/MIPS.

There are no step-by-step instructions for this, so google those search terms and read tldp.org until your eyes bleed. Then, document the process here so that when somebody asks the same question six months down the road, they have something to work from.

It's not going to be a point-and-click task, but you will learn a lot from it and it will be far more rewarding than blindly following a "guide."

Good luck.

Hmm...I am tempted to believe that the use of samba on the tivo would be prohibitive due to lack of hardware resources (if its intended for win computers that is.)

Samba will work. However, you can also make Windows XP work with the standard Unix LPR service, which (since you need that anyway) could mean slightly less overhead. At least this is true with XP Pro.
