I have a DirectTV tivo and it is the series 2 model. I have a few things I need to back up and dont know anything about linux and stuff. Is there an easier way to take the video from the Tivo to my PC for people who are unfamiliar to this stuff. I am running out of spoace and need to sent it to my HD on my PC running win XP. Anyone who can help in anyway would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are only 2 ways to approach this:
- pay some one else to hack your Tivo for you, then you learn how to run the tools to extract the videos
- learn to hack your Tivo yourself, and then learn how to run the tools to extract the videos

The easiest way to hack DVR2 is to use Sleeper's ISO/TivoScript.

Here is an easy instructions link on how to use the TyTool to extract and convert to DVD:

Sorry, there are no easy way out. Either learn what you need to know to accomplish your goal, or get a VCR, or Tivo/DVD-R combo...

"analog extraction" ;) archive your shows to video tapes for later viewing.

You can't with an VCR. Only purpose is to archive the shows you like.

If you really want to do it the "legal way", then you can get stuff (tv/video tapes..etc) onto your PC by "video capturing". You will need
- a PC
- a video capturing device All-In-Wonder (http://www.ati.com/products/radeon7500/aiwradeon7500/) video card for example

Connect your Tivo's video/audio output to the video capturing device's input. And use the software supplied with the capturing device to "digitize" all your videos to files on your PC.

Some digital video camera already have this capability. If you got one, then read the manual on how to do it. Usually it requires you to get a firewire card. Then you connect Tivo output to video camera input, connect video camera's firewire port to pc.

okay I will do it myself but is there a tutorial that will help me and be in lamens terms so I can understand it. Sorta like Tivo extraction for dummies :D

I have my tivo HD in my PC now and am willing to do the hacking as long as its legal.
Oh yea I hear that I will need to use Linux and saw a lite version. Can I use that? Its knoppix lite.

I have my tivo HD in my PC now...

And you booted WinXP with it attached which means it wrote a signature to the drive, correct?

Read the sticky notes and be aware you have probably just made the drive unusable in your TiVo without reloading it from scratch.
