Hi all,

I have a HDVR40 on connected to a dual lnb on a round dish.

Its reporting problems acquiring a signal on tuner 2 - only on some transponders. For others, its receiving a signal with no problem.

Is my LNB ready for replacement?

Incidentally, before I realised problem existed only on selected transponders, I thought it might be a wiring problem. To confirm this, I disconnected both tuners and re-connected the 1 good coax to tuner 2. There was no signal at all! This was corrected when I connected the second coax to tuner 1. Not sure if this is significant, but thought I'd mention it.

Tuner 2 won't be recognized without also having a connection to tuner 1. Are you still having the same problem on tuner 2 when you swap cables? There are certain transponders that you won't get a signal on as they are for local spot beams aimed at other parts of the country. Check all of the channels you're subbed to and see if they all come in. If so then you may not have a problem at all.

Yes, once I connected the coax to tuner 1 there was a good signal again; albeit on tuner 2 this time.

I understand that some transponders might not come in because of the spot beam, but why would 1 tuner get a good signal when the other didn't?

For clarity, let's agree on some terms: There are two tuner inputs on the back of the Tivo, Tuner 1 and tuner 2; there are also two coax cables, let's call them coax A and coax B; lastly there are two LNB connectors - call them Left and Right.

The first step is to swap the coax at the back of the TiVo (move coax A from tuner 1 to tuner 2, move coax B from tuner 2 to tuner 1). If the problem stays with tuner 2, tuner 2 is bad. If both tuners work perfectly, the problem was probably a bad crimp or dirty center conductor on coax B. If the problem moves to tuner 1, the problem is either the LNB or the coax; go to step 2.

The next step is to swap the coax at the lnb (move coax A from the left lnb connector to the right; move coax B from the right lnb connector to the left). If the problem moves to the other tuner, the LNB is bad, replace it. If the problem stays on the same tuner, you've got a bad coax (or connector).

The bad news is - it's probably the coax. It can be corroded or poorly crimped connectors, or damaged coax - rodents LOVE to chew on the stuff, and when they chew throught the shield, the symptoms get really weird.
