I will be upgrading my Series 2 DTivo in the next month or so. I wanted to try and contribute back to the Tivo hacking community if I can. I really do not have much talent in the form of programming but, I am a part-time technical writer for my company so I could contribute to documentation/change managment aspect of a project?

I was wondering if any projects are in need of any such talent?

pretty much ALL the projects here could benefit from a manual/howto written by someone with a fresh perspective that's just finished climbing the learning curve - even if you have 3 good howto's, noobs might only be able to understand 1

why not document what you use as you learn how to use it? (tivoweb, csoscout, drive upgrade, whatever)

several people have started threads here and reserved the first x # of posts to be edited in later with info. if the info's any good it gets stickied or moved into a howto thread - that's worth a shot

for those without ANY skills, a sawbuck to the author of a util you enjoy never hurts ;)

Actually, that's the biggest complaints of noobs is the lack of a "clear, concise document on howo do xyz"*. The ones I get annoyed with are the ones that come with the attitude that they are somehow owed this. By creating such documentation, you are helping both noobs and experienced developers because they will be pestered less.

Some of the most talented developers in this field are the most non-communicative because they've probably been pestered into seclusion. They probably receeive too many PMs and rude responses to their posts.

* BTW, anyone willing to spend 20 lousy bux can buy Jeff Keegan's book. It is probably the best piece of literature ever written on this subject. I never bothered with the Tivo hacking books until now because I figured they'd just be filled with pretty pictures and a bunch of stuff I already knew. When I actually took a look at the table of contents for Jeff's book on the Amazon web site, I had to have it. He goes into a good bit of detail on TCL, Tivo TCL extensions and how to manipulate the Tivo MFS DB. He also has a good primer on Linux and the most popular hacks.
