I finally got my new tivo working (expanded hard drive etc) but more problems!
I'm using it with dishnetwork 6000 receiver. When I try and record a show the tivo won't turn on my sat receiver. Is this normal? I would expect tivo would be able to use the IR cable to at least turn the receiver on so you don't have to leave it on 24/7.
AND will tivo turn it off afterwards?

From what I remember about my SA Tivo you had to leave your DSS receiver on 24/7. The Tivo will only change channels and doesn't control the on/off functions.

No, TiVo won't power the receiver on and off. Leave it on 24/7 and TiVo will change the channel for you.

wow, for something as advanced as tivo, what a disappointment! I would think leaving your receiver on 24/7 will only shorten the life of your receiver. what a shame.

For most satellite STBs, putting them in standby just kills the video output and probably changes the colour of an LED on the front - all the electronics is still powered and working and it won't make any difference to the life of the box.
In the UK, TiVo can switch on satellite boxes, but that was only because the STBs were so flaky they kept restting themselves.

Considering how long the tivo takes to boot (and longer if you have hacked it), I wouldn't want it to power down on me. What might be nice (depending on how you use the live buffer) is to have the tuners go to sleep and the constant buffering of live tv stop. Does this happen when you go into "standby"? This would allow the drives to be put to rest and probably make them last longer. That said I never put my system into standby either so it doesn't affect me.

Only on DirecTivos, AFAIK. I don't believe SA Tivos have a standby mode. The drives are still spinning but the heads don't constantly seek if the buffering is not taking place. Scheduled recordings will still occur while in standby but you won't be able to wake up the Tivo from its nap and expect to have the last 30 minutes of the current show in the buffer.

I was fairly certain that my ATT series 2 stand alone box had standby. That was a long time ago and I may be wrong however, I only have DTivo's now. It might be worth me putting my box in standby when I leave for long vacations though because just spinning the discs is less hard on the drive than constant seeking/writing/reading.

I've never owned a S2 SA Tivo so my recollection was based on the S1 SA model I owned many years ago. It would seem feasible that the S2 SA models would have a standby mode. However the S1 DTivos also had it whereas the SA models did not so go figger.

I seem to have it on my SA S1. TiVo->Messages & Setup->Standby (bottom entry on page). Might be a version 3 software thing, but I thought it had it all along. And I can't tell right now if the buffering stops as it is recording.

UK S1s have a Standby mode, accessible from the remote. But it does not effect the buffer, which keeps recording.

My SA S2 will keep recording the 30 min buffer even in stand-by mode, heck it even says that in the instructions included with the unit.
