View Full Version : move existing recordings from S1 DTivo to S2? Or mfs-ftp between S1 & S2

I currently have a Hughes S1 Dtivo. I have about 20 recordings I would like not to lose. I have a S2 (actually HD Tivo) that will have mfs-ftp when hacking is done.

In addition, I either want to network the (now unhacked) S1 unit OR upgrade to a S2 Dtivo. Either would be to take advantage of the cool transfer features of mfs_ftp. I was just going to get a TurboNet card for my Hughes, but I think I read in the mfs_ftp thread that there is trouble moving recordings between S2 and S1 units? Is this not possible? Something about video but not audio transferring? Both units I have are DireTiVo's, so both have Dolby Digital capabilities.

If I can reliably move files between the S1 and S2 DTiVos, I will keep the Hughes I have. So that brings up the next question- can I upgrade it to TurboNet AND keep my recordings? I only have one drive now, but could add a second or backup drive to clone if needed. If that is possible, can I run unscramble or something like it to get the recordings unscrambled ( so they will match the state of my new HD Tivo, which will have noscramble on.)

If I cannot use mfs_ftp with S1 and S2 together, then I may ask DirecTv for a S2 model. If this is the way I go, I will probably use sleeper's ISO to upgrade it. But is there a way to transfer the recordings from the old (now unhacked) S1 to the new S2? I doubt it, but I wanted to check to be sure. Did not know if I pull the drive from the S1 w/ recordings if I could somehow move those recordings to the new HD when they were both in the PC. I would not want to buy a TurboNet card for my S1 JUST to enable extraction for those recordings and then sell the S. I guess I was hoping while it was in the PC, I could somehow grab a bunch of data representing the exsisting recordings and then when the S2 was hacked, move them over. Sounds impossible, but I figured I'd ask.

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I want to learn. That is one of the reasons I will keep a standard def TiVo around in addition to the HD one; so I can learn on the older one. Thanks for any help.

Simplest answer: Your best option would be to add a Turbonet card to your Series 1, and hack it so future recordings will not be scrambled. AFIK, even unscrambled recordings cannot be transfered between a S1 and S2. The latest word I saw on this indicated it was solvable, but nobody was working on the problem.

Can I add turbonet, mfs_ftp, tivoweb plus, etc.. to my currently unhacked S1 and preserve the recordings I have now? Do any of the how-to's get into this option?

your hughes is allmost certainly at sw 3.1 prom 2.5, so here's basically what you need to do

put 2.0 sw (or an extreme image) on a seperate drive and flash the prom to the speedboot image - once you have a speedboot prom you can nuke the 3.1 kernel initrd and add bash/network drivers to rc.sysinit

install the tivoapp nocso patch - that'll let you play the 20 or so scrambled recordings you allready have & new recordings will be unscrambled.

if you extract those recordings you'll need to use mfs_ftp/scramble_utils to backup the DC key, or you can use unscramble to decrypt during extraction

those are the broad strokes, the howto's will fill in the details

s1 dtivo audio doesn't play properly on s2 hardware, but I'm working on some utils to fix that. lotta issues though, different s2 types, tytool/tystudio compatability, 810 burning compatability, etc

Thanks for the reply Riley. If it were your choice (keeping in mind I'm a newbie but want to learn), would you hack the S1 to be networked to my HD Tivo, or just deal w/ the lost recordings and try to get a free S2 from DirecTV? Will the S2 play better w/ the HD Tivo and mfs_ftp, etc..? My guess is yes.

If I get an S2, is there a way to move the S1 recordings to a PC archive (or later, inserted into the S2 when audio is worked out) without having to buy Turbonet for the S1? Can it be done when the S1 drive is attached to the PC? If I could archive what I have and then sell the S1, I would move on and start playing w/ an S2 DTivo to go with the HDTivo.

it's really not cost effective to try & network the s1 unless you find a turbonet cheap, or more likely an original tivonet very cheap

it IS well worth the effort to add serial bash or ppp/tcp for the learning experience

you can extract recordings with the drive connected to a pc, but extract+decrypt requires the process occur in the tivo itself. (encrypted recordings can only be played back on the same unit so decrypt is kinda important)

recordings consist of several parts throughout mfs, the audio/video is stored in fsids. Scrambling Issues: Archiving, Restore & Decrypting scrambled recordings (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30547) will outline the requirements to decrypt during extraction. Direct extraction from a tivo drive in a pc (not networked) (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23192) covers direct drive -> drive extraction procedures

to decrypt without networking you'll need to connect an additional drive to the tivo, create an Ext2 partition, and use mfs_export or mfs_tarstream to extract+decrypt the fsids & save them to the secondary drive. installing mfs_ftp, even without networking, will cache the xml & fsid numbers needed & make that process SO much easier. then just connect the Ext2 formatted drive to the pc

also a bit of an involved process, but well worth it for anyone interested in learning
