DTVTIVO - DVR40 setup w/o phone

I just moved to a new house and have never had DTV before. I have a question about setting up my new DVR40 without having a phone line. I know that I don't need a phone line after the inital setup by reading the forums.

My question is can I take my DVR40 over to a friends house to use his phone line for the inital setup, but have no A/V input to the DVR? Does the DVR need a signal to setup?

Yes, you can do the initial setup without having the sat feed connected. When it boots up to the screen where it's acquiring the satellite signal, press the DTV button and it should take you right to guided setup if you haven't already done it. If you have then it will take you to Tivo Central where you can access the phone setup menu through Messages & Setup. Let it make the initial call to download the list of local access numbers and then let it make a test call. Depending on what version of software you have you may also want to force a couple of daily calls so it can download the latest OS updates before you hack it. I would think by now that you should be able to force it to take the 3.1.1c update.
