looking for a bit of help on this issue. I've searched and my situation maybe more unique and experienced extractors may have a quick answer.

also, this may need to be moved to the extraction forum..

Issue deals with Philips DVD-711 player, which with a search shows someone did get tyDVD (tivo burned DVD) to work. The player spins and doesn't even get to the menu.

DTivo, newest version of Tytools 9r14, Nero 6.3 (and 5.5.40 originally)
dvd-r : Sonic DVD-r (4x media code MUST 001),
burner: Optorite with upgrade to firmware 2.60

Extracted from Dtivo with philips 711. Extracted show recorded with Dolby Digital using tytools (did twice with #8 encoding (for first 2 seconds that may be in dolby, and then no audio encoding. Vob is perfect with WINDVD (and media player) as is the IFO. burned to disc and the DVD Player won't read it.

my media: Sonic DVD-r (4x media code MUST 001), attempted to burn at 4x, 2x, and 1x. I did not get any errors in the media burning process, and the dvd-r's are read as DVD's in my non burner (I don't recall if 4x burn picked it up or not). The media has extreme audio choppiness in Windows Media Player (referencing here for later - before any comments) and in WinDVD it starts to play and i get an error right after selecting the menu ( i thought this was where the encoding switched so I re-encoded).

(i just searched for the error and may have come up with a solution "MyComputer/Properties(for the DVD)/Settings, and unchecked the DMA box")

So to check on the media, I borrowed a friends DVD-r of a movie he owns, - checked it in my player (philips DVD-711) and it worked fine. Burned it as a copy with my media and plays fine in my player. I tried the disc in my computer, windows media player audio still extremely choppy (making the audio encoding not an issue for when the DVD player reads it) but WinDVD plays it fine (no error)

I tried reburning with the one disc my friend lent me..Memorex (i forgot the code) that the movie was burned on, and my burner failed to actually burn the DVD-r).

also to note, my dvd-r I'm making is less then 2 hours, his was full length (looking at how far the LASER burned)

So the quesions I have.
Was the copy of the movie I burned,
- a lucky disc of my pack,
- am I encoding it incorectly (i've searched for settings and followed to a T... and the DMA box solution may solve this),
-is the not full length of the disc (4.x gb) and where the actual LASER starts to read from effecting the DVD Player (dvd-711) - inside of disc or outside of disc (is this even an issue)

Could the fact the encoding is in dolby digital effect it (I would think not as teh menu never showed up)?

Should I just try again with better media?? Could the cleaning of the lens in the DVD player make a difference (my folks DVD player stopped reading regulary DVD's and a cleaning of the lens fixed that, but here the burned dvd movie worked fine (unless it has to deal with where the media starts on teh dvd-r)

any help or thought would be appreciated. I tried searching and trying not to post (as I have done many times before), didn't find my answer and decided to post - and hopefully helpful to others.) sorry about the long post.

Not all DVD players can play 480X480 resolution DVDs made from a DTivo. However, if your player can play SVCDs then it shouldn't be an issue. Since you didn't specifiy whether you had a S1 or S2 DTivo I am going to assume it's a series 2 model. Dolby Digital audio on a S2 DTivo is a hit or miss proposition when it comes to successful extraction and DVD creation.

You should not have to select any audio transcoding options in TyTools when extracting shows froma DTivo so deselect any audio options you currently have selected. I would recommend trying your process with a program that does not have a DD soundtrack and see how it goes. I would also recommend that you experiment with DVD-RW discs since you seem to be making a few coasters. -RW discs are more forgiving in that you can simply erase your mistakes and try again.

I don't have any experience with the newer versions of Nero so you may want to try experimenting with some of the settings. I always burn my DVDs with Nero in UDF/ISO format and have had nearly 100% success rate with over 500 DVDs burned to date and counting.

Many dvd players can't switch back and forth between mpeg layer 2 audio and dolby digital so for dolby digital streams I recommend trying #8 for audio in order to turn the mpeg layer 2 audio to dolby digital if you have problems with no transcoding of dolby digital.

Well I thought I would post how my issues have been resolved in case any one search for philips or dvd-711....

- winDVD crashing with tydvd... unchecked the DMA box and it works fine.
- went home to my folks place tried in their philips DVD player 825 and same issue.
- went to a store and tried my tyDVD in a few dvd players and they read okay. so the DVD was fine.
- therefore, realized my coaster weren't coasters completely, just for my DVD player. Burning same thing a few times to check was interesting.

I had read at video help somewhere that dvd-r will only work for my player with more than 4 GB of data on a DVD-r (less allowed for dvd+r).
- I bought some dvd-rw (TDK) and those didn't work in my philips player with >4gb
- Realizing I may buy a new dvd player ... I burned to a dvd-r and tested again with > 4GB and it worked.

I'd assume the > 4 GB may also work on the philips 825 that my parents still have.

Could you please post your results in the sticky thread in the extraction forum. Its the one that has a list of dvd players known to work with tytool created dvd's and it would be nice to record this "trick" there so others can reference it.

This sounds like there are other issues involved. There shouldn't be a size limitation for the files on the DVD in order for them to play back correctly. I would recommend experimenting with various methods of recording in Nero. I use UDF/ISO for all my DVD-R/RW discs and they all play back fine on my Sony player, regardless of size. I'm currently using an older version of Nero and I understand the newer versions have settings different from mine.

Captain Video-

I have no problems possibly adding a few coasters to the cause.. I did try burning a few with udf/iso format but my burner couldn't close the file. so I have a few questions...

do you create the audio_ts and video_ts folders???

also i get a pop-up for multi-session?? and definetly set to Xbox compliant correct???

I tried with a philips DVD-RW and it didn't work even with teh same file on that worked on the DVD-R. Maybe a long erase???

Also the post I read about the DVD player said that DVD+R's would work for under 4 gb. (i'm still debating dishing out $60 for a new player.. but good to research). I'll also figure out where I can pad additional files to reach teh 4GB limit if thats the only way.

Yes. I just drag and drop them into the Nero UDF/ISO project.

My version of Nero doesn't give me a pop-up for multi-session or X-Box compatibility (I think it's something like version 5.9.9.10)

I tried with a philips DVD-RW and it didn't work even with teh same file on that worked on the DVD-R. Maybe a long erase???
I've always been able to do a quick erase with no problems on my Princo DVD-RW's.

Like I said, you should probably try experimenting with the various formats like UDF, UDF/ISO, and DVD-Video until you find something that works with your player.

Since the physical format of dvd-r and dvd-rw are different, there are some dvd players that will play one and not play the other.

I've been doing video extraction for a while, but I just started cutting DVDs from my extracted .ty files.

I also have a Phillips DVD 711 and this is what I've found so far: DVD-R discs produced with TyTools won't play, but DVD+RW discs will. This is in spite of googling to find that the DVD-711 player is supposed to read DVD-R discs.

Next I'm going to try DVD+R.
