I've seen some posts that discuss this briefly, 90% of the time it's you guys blasting the other guy for trying to "Steal" Tivo.

I am a happy DTivo "Life Subscriber" However, I kinda outgrew DirecTV, not to mention they can't even come close to beating my local cable company on prices.

My dilemma comes from me cutting off my phone line about 6 months ago. I did it b/c both me and my g/f had cell phones, and we got cable internet at the house, so no need for phone line. There are plenty of things on here of how to shut down dTivo's call in, and since I had already paid the lifetime, felt there was no reason not to go ahead and shut the daily call off, and so I did.

Now I've got a regular standalone for my cable, and I'm forced to get a telephone line to call in for the guide details. So now, for Tivo service, I'm going to have to pay $35/month for the phone line and $12.95/Month for service. (I don't see that happening Phone line Not to mention my area does not have a local call in number) Now I don't have a problem paying the lifetime service, and if I can do this - I WILL DEFINANTLY DO~~!!~~ But is there any other way to get the guide?? Possibly TivoNet? I know I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to the Stand Alone's, but this forum seems to be pretty much directed at dTivo's, and finding stuff just on the Stand Alone's is pretty hard.

Any help would be apprecited,
B

My SA1 gets listings from the turbonet card through Internet/broadband connection. I think S2 will do the same. You don't need POTS line if you have broadband access fro the Tivo.

On the StandAlone (as the original poster stated he had) Series 2, guide update over broadband is fully supported by tivo. Check the help files on the tivo website for more info. You don't even need to hack anything to get it working.

The help files discuss series 2 standalones, not series 1. Will I be able to configure the series 1? and if so, where can I read how to?

I think the point they are trying to make is, you don't need a guide to set it up. It's part of the stock Tivo software.

You have a Series 1? You will need a TurboNet card or a cache card from (other suppliers may be availible) 9th tee. I think that once you get that running you will find it is pretty simple to get the TiVo Series 1 to update its guide data and software over the internet. Basically all you have to do after installing the card and driver is to change your calling prefix to ,#401 on the Phone Dialing Options menu.

You don't need a network card, either.

why don't I need a network card?? The series one doesn't come with it?? I would have to get it to download the updates of the net correct??

Nevermind, didn't click on your links, thought they were your signature, however after reading a couple tutorials, I would rather go with turbonet, mainly for TivoWeb and extraction purposes.

Quite right, I had forgotten that option. Might be easier on the wallet, too. And if he has 3.0 software he can even enable ppp over serial updates from the Phone Options menu.
