I in awe of getting started lost my thinking cap. I ran the Prom method only to come back to the sticky which said it is only for soldered proms. I don't think mine is soldered. I need to start over. When I run the Monte method I noticed that it wants to create new partitions but is starting at partition 6 instead of 4.

I'm thinking the best thing to do is wipe my new drive clean and start over. When I use FDISK it says no partitions are defined on my new drive. So FDISK isn't the right utility. Do I boot from a floppy and do a dos format?

I'm confused

Also, since I ran the PROM method to completion would it hurt my HDVR2 system in anyway if I installed the drive and tried booting?

It won't hurt your HDVR2, but it just won't work.

You can always use the utility disk that came with your new hard drive to format the drive. As I said, just delete/rename the tivo directory on your FAT32, and reboot, then you should be able to start from scratch, no need to format.

I did restart with the Monte and skipped the backup phase, and ran the Monte to completion. But what worries me is in the Surgery Phase it said that the bootpage was going to be written to the root of /dev/hd6 instead of to the /dev/hd4 when it was in the run under the PROM method.

Any issues with this?

Since then I also put the drive back into my Hughes box and DirecTV comes up just fine. I am also able to telnet into the box. Pretty exciting. Now I need to learn what else I can do!?

Then you are fine. Don't worry about it. Continue with the learning/hacking. :)
